Here's a few 45 Auto loads for hunters to consider using as an emergency backup weapon or for hunting at short distances only:
1. Double Tap 230-gr. Bonded Gold Dot JHP @ 1,010 fps / 15.3" & .95".
2. Hornady 230-gr. XTP Soft Point or JHP @ 875 fps.
3. Winchester Ranger T 230-gr. +P JHP (RA45TP) @ 990 fps / 15.3" & .87".
4. Winchester Ranger T 230-gr. JHP (RA45T) @ 890 fps / 14.7" & .77".
5. Remington 230-gr. Golden Saber JHP @ 875 fps / 14.6" & .72".
6. Double Tap 200-gr. Bonded Gold Dot JHP @ 1,125 fps / 14.7" & .89".
7. Federal 230-gr. Hydra-Shok JHP.
8. Hornady 200-gr. XTP JHP.
9. Remington 200-gr. Golden Saber JHP.
10. For emergency self defense, use: 1. 230-gr. FMJ Ball; 2. Any heavy for caliber load from above; 3. Run real fast. |

A .45 acp is the smallest round that you can use in Minnesota for back up purposes

I dont know neveda hunter. A .45 acp is excellent for backup. Especially in an automatic. I never go in the woods during hunting season w/o my .45. I have never been to picky about loads either. As long as we its needed I can fire 10 quick rounds.

My favorite backup guns when hunting are:
* 45 ACP Ruger KP345PR (Late Model)
* 357 Mag Ruger Security Six 4" (Early Edition)
For shorter distances, both are adequate for hunting light skinned game; type of bullet used also makes a difference; don't let short-sighted folks tell you otherwise.

On Sat I had Ruger .45 acp in the box and ready to go then at the last minute I went with .357mag instead. Went with a Taurus 608ss4 It holds 8 rounds and weighs 44 oz empty and 51 loaded I liked the 10 round capability of the auto but if I needed more than eight rounds I could beat it to death  Anybody else own same model of gun ? Like to know what to expect haven't fired it yet forgot key at home!

When you say "backup round" do you mean as a hunting weapon or as perhaps self protection from bears/cats/wolves while on a hunt?

Mine would be for protection or finishing shot ( in case I had a bad first shot, not likley but it could happen :D ) I shot it last weekend for the first time should've went with the 6" barrel the 4 " isn't very accurate mabye after shooting it for a while I could do better with it I did get all eight rounds on paper at 20 yds.

I use .45acp wolf FMJ. I think anything no less than 9mm auto is plenty.
