STEP 1) with the yote on the ground I like to make my first cuts.Take knife and make a cut from one ankle of the yote to the other. And come back to the A-hole and make two cuts in a V notch .This is the only hair that is left on the carces.

STEP 2) make a cut up ward from the base of the tail .Only 6 inchs or so.

STEP 3) Hang your yote up in a tree or on a skinning rack and cut around the ankles .And start pulling.

STEP 4) This is the hardest part.Pull the pelt down past the hips.

STEP 5) pull the pelt lose from the tail ONLY as far as it is cut to.

STEP 6)Now the tail most people have a lot of trouble with it.You can use tail strippers or pliers but for me I use two spike nails around 6 inchs long put one on top and one on the bottom of the tail above the pelt and squeeze real hard and make one quick pull and it is off.

STEP 7) this is where i like to cut or saw off the front legs.and then strip the hide down to the shoulders.

STEP 8)Once you get to the shoulders it gets tuff again .One thing that help is to hold the hide in one hand and put your knee on the pelt and push down .Once you get the pelt over most of the shoulders you can use your hands to push one leg bone up thru the hide and take a smooth stick or sharping steel and run it between the pelt and the shoulder and one quick pull and do the other.

STEP 9)once your past the shoulders use your knee again until you get to the head you can feel the ear butts with your fingers and make your cut on one and then the other.Pull hide down and it is the same thing with the eyes. now you can either pull the hide plum off or do a nice job and pull the hide down and cut the lips lose off the jaw and cut the nose .and your done.

There is a couple of things that will help make the skinning go a little faster.
1.You can use an air hose to loosen the hide from the body. Put the air hose in the bullet hole and hit it with the air a lot of Taxidermest do this and it works great if you have an air hose.
2. a winch.
3. A choke coller for dogs with a rope loop at the end.Wrap the chain collar around the leg of the pelt (not the leg bone)and put your foot in the rope loop and step down it helps strip the pelt lose .
I have made a couple of coyote skinning rigs With electric winchs on them and they are the fastest and easest things to use. Especially when you have a dozen cold yotes on the ground.
4. As your stripping the pelt down you can stick your fist inbetween the meat and pelt to loosen the hide.
5. The best way to skin a yote is rite after you shoot it. Once it gets cold it gets alot harder!!

Where i live they are numerous. The govt actually encourages hunting coyotes they are NBL. There is a neat study on the coyote that came out from the provincial govt if i can find the link i'll post it here.

In the lower mainland (Vancouver , BC) they did a study/census of the urban coyote back in the mid 90's. At that time they estimated 5, 000 coyotes to be living in the lower mainland.

Oh, forgot to mention cool post! Do you tan the hides yourself??

Here is a link to that Coyote study the provincial Govt. had done. I'd say it's accurate. Best of all it encourages hunting coyotes. here is the link;

http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/fw/documents/coyote.pdf

It's a PDF file so it may take some time to load. I'll try to find the link to the lower mainland coyote study. This was a study done on strickly urban coyotes.
