I was asked to compose an article about the new Springfield "Professional FBI" model 1911 in .45 ACP pertaining to practical application in the field and not just file another technical evaluation or "street" usage article. So I decided to do a hunting piece from the stand point of how would the gun work as a sidearm for a hunting guide, rancher, cowboy, etc. in the field.
Date - July 30-31, 2005
Place - Southwest of Mason, TX
Temp - up to 99, clear starting out changing to overcast with heavy thundershowers in the afternoon
Gun - Springfield "Professional FBI" model 1911 in .45 ACP
Ammo - Corbon 230 gr. hollow points
Range - 35-40 yards
Shot placement - straight on as the ram was coming toward me and looking right at us
For those of you who notice such things, yes, that is a very light colored shirt. My first set of clothes had gotten soaked one of the rain storms that produced some very vivid entertainment for us while we were on the top of one of the hills trying to hide under a low rock outcropping. After all mud on the face and sticks in the hair doesn't make for good photos, and the first thing on top in my bag when we got back to the truck to change was this shirt.

| Actually these animals were free ranging. The rancher who owned the property isn't sure where they came from and just wanted them removed from his ranch. We spent several hours trying to get around in front of them but got busted each time and the rams spooked and ran away. Finally, late in the afternoon we were able to use the cover of one of the thunderstorms to make our way around in front of them and when the storm passed I attempted an ambush along their route of travel. |

Just curious if an autopsy revealed anything from the 230-gr. Corbons from a 45 ACP?

P.S. 45 ACP Winchester Ranger T's in 230-gr. +P (RA45TP) penetrate almost 15.7" and expand to .79" in heavy denin or wallboard / plywood tests and should be a decent hunting round. OTOH: Using ball ammo for self defense is smart. |

| The 230 gr Corbon entered the ram just to the left of the sternum. It traveled through the chest cavity severing one of the main arteries to the heart and the left lung from the breathing tube and came to a stop in the stomach. I would estimate that it penetrated between 16 and 19 inches. It had mushroomed out to .84 inches and still weighed 185 grains on my powder scale. Though this was not necessarily intended to be a test of the Corbon ammo I believe that it performed as advertised. Thanks for asking. |
