I just booked a hunt in Quebec near Clova. I've been looking at the maps and it looks pretty good. I have hunted in Quebec before near Rouyn-Noranda and also Ft. Chimo. I had excellent success in Quebec for both the Caribou and Black Bear. I figured I try a Moose this time. (it's been 20 yrs.).
I have a few question about the moose hunt and would appreciate any advice. I am 46 Years old and will be hunting with 1 friend.
Is it worth calling the second week of gun season and what's a good call?
Are the bugs there or will there be a chill. How is the pike and walleye fishing in early October ? I figured I'd ask here on this board.
I know bow season is before in September, When does the ru start?
Thanks for the help.
Jim

I seen your question and decided to register to post up some information for you, since I have lived in Quebec, and hunted and fished there since I was 13.

You can never go wrong with calling when you hunt for moose. The Rut is usually in full swing late Sept, very Early Oct, however you can still get some response, and get a curious animal to come in to a call, but don't expect the same kinda of action you would get during the rut. I have called in a few moose the first week of the hunt before, but some years you can call and call, and not get any response.

As for what call in the best, well thats a debate all on its own. That late in the season probably Cow in Heat would be best, as a grunt won't be as effective, because most of the breading has already happened, and the dominance already achieved. I'd put my bet on the cow call, however there is no harm in changing it up. Just don't over call, resist the urge to call too much, Myself I call every 15-20min early morning and late evening, but every 30 minutes during the afternoon. Also if its really windy, its usually just better to sit and wait on a Logging road in a clearing, or in a swamp.

As for the fishing, Pike is good in Oct, the waters are cold, and Pike become more active than the summer months, and the larger fish move in to shallower waters. Your Chance to hooking a larger fish are better early spring and late fall!! As for walleye, I don't fish them much, so I can't really comment.

If you have any other questions let me know!! :thumbsup1:
