Good Evening All:
Second in the unit 15 update, was down in unit 15 Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, Camped at the El Casa campgrounds, lot of people using the campgrounds.
Coyotes- still a lot of dogs in the area, they enjoy singing in the morning, but one less voice on Sunday (harvested on Saturday evening) morning see attached of CIC House (Commander In Charge of household), This springs pup came in looking for a rabbit and found a .223 instead. Only one dog this weekend, but there is still time and lots of scouting to do.
Now for the Elk:
Lots of Archery hunting working this area, from 32 west across Slaughter Mesa all the way to Hwy 12, talked with several, they have been seeing bulls but not getting shots. Sunday morning left the truck at 0400 and started my walk in, though the canyon to the first turn, there was a bull at the beginning of the canyon and bugling, did not hear any cows talking, I’m assuming a single bull, got past him and across the valley floor, as entered the tree line, spooked something in-front of use, not sure but it did make a lot of noise though the timber. Worked across three draws to the bowl I needed to be in. Arrived the vantage point just after 5am. Sat down by the tree and listened to 3 different bulls bugle before sun-up. To the North-East of my location was the better sounding bull, nice deep voice. I sat and watched a hunter enter the far South (same way I come in) end of the canyon using a headlamp to make his way in, this sent the bull further North, never did see him. The bull that was across the flats did stay until sun-up and he is a Rag Horn 4X5, try to find some cows. Did the coyote hunt to no avail, went and picked up the Trail Cam I had placed out the previous Wednesday, counter showed 34 pictures, I was excited, trip home and plugged in the Camera, I did not trim a large branch off a tree about 12 feet in front. Only one bad picture of a bull, not sure how big, but did get some good cow/calf pictures (see attached). The bulls are there and singing in the mornings. I’ll lay off the area for a couple of weeks and then back out the for a better camera set up.
Best of Luck
