ONTARIO might have a new record-book moose for archery. Steve Shore of Belle River shot the animal northwest of Nakina on September 22, 2004.
The rack measured 64 inches and the palms were 16 inches wide; one had 12 points, the other 14. The current Ontario record is 201 2/8.
Shore called the animal in early in the day to try getting a shot for his wife, Jacquelyn (pictured with him)1,600 and 1,700 pounds. |

He's still trying to get the bull measured by a Federation for the Recognition of Ontario Wildlife official, but unofficial measurements have put its score between 198 and 210. The rack measured 64 inches and the palms were 16 inches wide; one had 12 points, the other 14. The current Ontario record is 201 2/8.
Shore called the animal in early in the day to try getting a shot for his wife, Jacquelyn (pictured with him), but it wouldn't come out in the open. Later, just before dark, he called it in and shot it with a compound bow at 12 yards, while it was rushing him. The animal had to be quartered to get it out of the bush, so weighing it was impossible. Guesstimates are, however, it was between 1,600 and 1,700 pounds.

Maybe, but just in size alone, much larger moose have been killed in Alaska. For example, three or four years ago a bow hunter killed a moose at close range. The antlers measured over 72" across. I don't know how the antlers scored, however.
This is another old score, but I have no idea if it was killed with a bow/arrow:
The present world record was taken in 1995 in Alaska and scored 2615/8 B&C points. |

It's a beautiful moose. Once a set of antlers hit the 60" mark it turns the moose into a highly desired animal. The largest one I have killed measured 57" across. I mounted the antlers myself, and it's now on display at my home. But since I hunt for meat, I am mostly interested on any "legal" bull moose to hunt each year. For the past six years or so, all the moose I have killed had antlers from 32" to maybe 40" across. Very tasty, though :) |
