I am new to this subject.
I was woundering on what to look for when buying a blackpower firearm?
The other thing is cleaning. I hear it is a big pain taking care of this type of firearm, is this true?
I have been thinking about buying one for 2 years.
Can anybody help me?

I wondered when somebody would post in the muzzleloader forum.
Check out this page:

At the very bottom is a link to a web site by B.E Spencer, he gives a lot of muzzleloading/black-powder info...

cleaning is really pretty simple. Black powder is just plain fun. somehow I got volunteered and became the black powder lead instructor for our hunter ed. program. We run about about 500 kids trough a year. If I can teach black powder its simple  What kind of rifle are you looking at flint sidelock or inline ???

Inlines are great. Less miss fires. Most new ones come tapped for mounting a scope and some can use a 209 primer instead of a percussion cap. I've got 3 knight inlines (really they are the states) they have fiber optic sights shot really well. I'm still a flintlock fan

gunslinger338, have you tried windex to clean your inlines?
I have heard it's the cat's meow for cleaning. |

In my opinion, muzzloader cleaning hassles can be greatly reduced with powder selection. Some people will use only black powder, which is fine, but some of the new stuff like the cleanshot or especially Hodgdon's triple 7, is the cats meow. These new powders are non corrosive, and the rifles dont need cleaned quite as often. Also, they are a nitrocellulose base, same as smokeless, therefore, conventional powder solvents will disolve the residue.

I know a lot of people who use pyrodex, pellets and flake, and swear by it, however I feel the tripple 7 is a cleaner, more consistent powder.

Maine sorry took so long to respond been hunting  We don't boil the gun parts to clean them but we do use boiling water the hot water dries fast on the metal parts leaving less moisture to rust. I shoot pyrodex and have no problems never have shot with triple 7 yet but do hear its good. I still use black powder F4 for my flash pan. See ya

I own 2 blackpowder inlines with 209 primers. I have a Remington 700ml 50 cal with open sights that my 21 year old son uses(nice gun) And then there is my baby. My T/C Black Diamond (synthetic stock, stainless barrel, fiberoptic sights and a Bushnell elite 3200 1.5 -4.5 scope) I use 2 pyrodex 50 grain pellets in both guns with Hornady sabot 240 grain bullets. My T/C will group under an inch at 100 yards. It is hard to get my 243 rem 700 to do that!!
