Ok, kind of a dumb question i know but havnt heard much about this.
After you make your kill, what do you do?
Ive read alot about people talking about how the drive out and then do some hiking for their actual kill, how do you haul it back home? Is keeping a truck/atv near by not practical? When people mention their long hikes do they really mean the stay relativly close to the vehicle just constantly walking around it? |

Well what i do is have the pack board in the truck. Then when you shot you deer or whatever you drag it tell you cant go any more then make the hike back to the truck to get the pack board then go up to you animle. what we do is corter it out and take as much meat off the carces as possible it litens the load alittle.

Grab it's antlers and keep pulling until you reach your vehicle!!
One of my buddies shot a deer two seasons ago and we gutted it and tied it to a tree we cut down and toted it out on our shoulders. |

I normally drag it to where I can get the truck, then I throw it in the back, take it home, and the gut it. Then I saw the antlers off, skin it, de-bone the carcass, and then take what I need pocessed down to this place not far from me where they grind up some of it and do the roasts and backstrap.
With rabbits, squirrels and other small game, I normally gut them and skin them, and then freeze them, and make the cuts I want when I thaw them and am ready to cook them.
For turkey, I pluck them, gut them, and chop off the legs. I keep the beards, which I tie with fishing line so they don't ever fall apart. |

before or after you take a bite out of its heart?
Drag it out, or if you've got a younger brother have him do it, thats what brothers are for! |

| I usualy enjoy the moment for a few minutes and look at the animal, but right after i slit the throat, then if its far away i gut it and grab it by the horns and start dragging. |

Well, I just sit next to the lifeless carcass petting it, sobbing uncontrollably, and apologize to the itty bitty wittle critter. (just joking-well, except the sobbing part)
Actually, I just thank god for the hunt and ATVs. I field dress the animal, load it up and haul it to the meat locker. We have a locker here that will skin and care for the trophy if applicable. It cost a whopping $10 more for them to skin and cape it out, so for me it's worth it. Plus they have a lot more experience caping the trophy than I do so there is less chance of me not leaving enough hide on it. I would advise checking with your local meat locker and see if that is an option.
Good luck hunting, and sorry for the sick attempt at being funny! |
