Wolff ... your CA mule deer is intriguing to me. Last month I had a business trip to Reno and rented a car and drove and hiked the east slope of the sierras. Muley country ... in fact, saw some mule deer in one of the wilderness areas. Beautiful country. I got as far south as Mammoth. Califiornia is a fascinating state.

I wasnt to far from Mammoth about six miles to the south. Mammoth is a great area, did you go to Red's meadow on back side of Mammoth?

Didn't go to Red Meadows ... Got off the road at Tioga Pass and went up to the Dana Plateau ... I wrote up a little blurb on my web page: http://www.woodengineering.com/adventures/ (you have to scroll down just a bit).
What's it like hunting down there? ... controlled hunts? ... few / lots of people? I saw some deer and PLENTY of sign hiking - but was that due to being in a wilderness? I was down there in late Sep and while I didn't `see' anybody, the few motels were all `No Vacancy'. I did see people fishing the streams.
An acquaintance of mine moved to a small town near here from Bishop. I never said anything to him about it - but I remember thinking - "Whoa, with mountains like that around - who would want to move???" Maybe there are things about Bishop I don't know about. This guy is a big time elk hunter - but he still drives quite a distance (from here) to hunt elk. (Though there are elk close.)
There's nothin' like that around here (the Sierras) ... you have to drive a fair distance to really get into some alpine-ish stuff.

Jeff read your experience on Dana Plateau made me wish I was there. Hunting here in Cal can be very good if you are willing to hike away from the weekend hunters. This usually means going into wilderness areas several miles. Here is a picture of the Ritter’s on the back side of Mammoth. The hunting zones are both over the counter and draw.

My son and daughter have done well over the past few years here in SD. I love the crossover area where the mulies and whitetails live. You never know what you will see when out and about.
