Don't try your airweight mechanical on a moose or other large game. Deer are fine. Until the mechanical fails. But mechanicals and light arrows and heads make zero sense for large stuff like Elk and Moose.

Bad to the Bone!!! 125gr
4-blade bleeding
2-blade easier penetration
Washington weight minimum is 6gr per lb. of pull.
65 lbs. of pull equals total arrow weight minimum of 390gr.

Where does speed vs weight for penetration trade off? Have not kept up with bows like guns. Know that for long shots with rifles light bullets don't work as good as heavy ones.

I just kept shooting my old PSE and carbons and 125s and it keeps killing. Then you see these posts. 55 grain head, light shaft and super speed.

my light weight arrow traveling 355 FPS off the string is producing more Ke than a 400 grain arrow traveling 270 FPS off the string plus with the vane configuration I use I am able to maintain that speed and KE longer down range
which also reduces the trajectory of the arrow down range which minimizes the guessing on which pin to use for a longer shot.

I have been doing this for 30 years and this is my favorite hunting arrow for Elk white tail and turkey sized game.

this arrow set up is not for everyone but it is for me
plus my bow is warranted to handle 3 grain per pound
otherwise I would be shooting a heavier arrow 8)

Archery- Thanks for the info. Just hard to accept for an old heavy arrow and rifle competitor. Hard to accept that fast ping pong ball can whop ya harder than the old golf ball.

Thanks, Jeff

LOL
the old ping pong ball vs the golf ball is hardly a accurate analogy to make a fair comparison. although I have heard it a million times I still roll my eyes every time I hear it

we can however use the analogy of a 30-06 verses lets say a 45-70
the 45-70 is only traveling a little over 1900 Feet per second even with a hot load you may get 2200 FPS Muzzle velocity where the 30 caliber bullet is traveling twice that out of the muzzle. when the 45-70 has hit the dirt at 250 yards the 3006 has only dropped an inch and is carrying as much Momentum and KE as the 4570 at the muzzle

yes a 4570 will nock a bull elk for a flip at 50 yards but a 30-06 will make him pile up on the spot as well.

you have to remember that blunt force trauma is not what kills using a bow but how sharp the projectile is, how much vital organs like arterys are severed as the arrow passes thru the animai and most importantly SHOT PLACEMENT!

I have also witnessed with both deer and turkey using the faster arrows that the animal never knew it was hit until it was too late which made for a lot easier retrieval of the animal because they never ran .

I shot a mature 8 point buck last season. as he was eating acorns he came in to my shooting lane broadside for a perfect shot.
when I shot at first I thought I missed, after nocking another arrow drawing back for another shot because the deer never moved and kept at his business eating I noticed blood pouring out both sides of the grazing deer.
a couple of minuites later he started gasping for a breath and piled up 5 feet away from where I shot him.

I have had several similar experiences with other deer and turkey with these High speed arrows
not to mention the greater range in accuracy 8)

Jeff

I know what you mean there Jeff, I still shoot an old Bear Whitetail II and still manage to kill every season. I'll continue using it until the limbs crack or they stop making strings to fit it.

I thought those 55 grain head claims were just missprints until I asked the guy at the Archery Shop, he said while not all that common yet thats where most are going now in the short future.
Wow I just cant imagine shooting something that small.

Archeryaddict is correct, shot placement in bow hunting is everything.
Congrats on the 8 point...must post pics
I never had one just keep feeding after I shot but have had a few jump and take a couple of bounds and then just stop and stand there looking until they stumbled around and fell dead.

actually the head has a 1" cutting diamiter the same as a Wasp Boss Bullet 8)

I dont think you will have any problems finding a Dacron string or the limbs busting on that bow, that is one of the finest hunting rigs ever made.
I got a lefty model hanging up in the closet that shoots just as good as any of the other bows I have just a little slower is all.

matter of fact the first bow deer I took was with a Bear Whitetail II

1 inch is a big broadhead :D

Having taken well over 100 head with my bow, I'm aware of shot placement and sharpness of heads. In fact if it makes more sense I'm a Zwickey/Rothar man and only recently tried Muzzy heads. Had a bout with open on impacts and swore I'd never use those crap heads again after 2 failures to open and day long tracking jobs. And that was a bad deal. With a normal head hit them almost anywhere and they are mine. Though center lung hits are the best.

But I'm only worried about speed and light arrows vs penetration. If the penetration is there, then it doesn't matter. I'd tried light arrows years ago. 2016 vs 2117 with 75 pound draw at 28 inch. Worked ok but the 2117 definitely penetrated better. Would have only trusted 2117 to elk and such. Recently went to 2213s and they worked out pretty good. Finally jumped into carbons. They work fine and really good for my wifes light 55 pound draw.

So maybe I will become more modern......Interesting conversation for sure.

Now with my Brackenbury takedown, when and if I go after moose, I think I'll still stick to heavy stuff for that setup.

Thanks again for the time.

Jeff

Sorry if this has already been said, I haven`t read through all the replies yet.

I prefer a fixed blade that is three times as long as it is wide. As close as possible anyway.
Last year I went with Magnus Snuffer. This year I probably will to, with my bow set near 80lbs and a 555 grain arrow, well that’s why I`m called pass threw…
I also like razor caps for the same design logic.

I have used a numer of broadheads over my career and they have all been 125 grains, just because I believe in kinetic energy over speed: kinectic energy kills, speed does not. For reference, here is my set-up: Mathews Ultra Max set at 70 lbs, 30 inch draw, Beman CarbonMetalMatrix arrows weighing 509 grains and I shoot them at 266 fps yielding 79.9 foot pounds of energy. That being said, I have tested and destroyed hundreds of dollars worth of broadheads and there are three that I would recommend to anyone: Muzzy three blade 125, Steelforce 125, and the redesigned NAP Razorback 125. Placed on the front of a correctly spined arrow, they will fly like your field points. The worst broadheads? Here's a list: Delta Rothaar Snuffer, Satellite Titan, Rocky Mountain Ironhead (However, the RM Legend was a great head). Shot through solid oak pallet material at 5 yards, these heads literally blew up. For pure penetration, go with the Steelforce or the Razorback. The Muzzy penetrates very well and, for a three blade, performs comparably to both. Hope this helps

Ive been using 125gr. nap thunderheads for a while now and I would recommend them to anyone. They have a ciamize blade with a 1 3/16 cutting Dia. that really does some damage.
