| Has anyone hunted for Pronghorn on the MacGuire Ranch in Hudspeth County Texas? I have my last hunt of the Texas Grand Slam coming up there this October and was wondering on what to expect. This will be my first Antelope hunt. My 270 and I are good to 400 yards, but I was thinking on getting a 243 WSSM. |

Your .270 is a classic and very find rifle for antelope, therefor I sense you are just looking for an excuse to buy another gun. This being the case, why not get a Remington Sendero in .25-06? Antelope hunting does not require you to climb steep mountains at high altitude or hike long distances where weight of a rifle or length of a rifle barrel may be concerns. The .25-06 is a nearly ideal pronghorn antelope cartridge, and the Sendero will milk all the accuracy and muzzle velocity (it has a heavy weight 26" barrel) out of the .25-06. Alternately, you might consider the .257 Weatherby or the .240 Weatherby.
I have both a .25-06 and a standard .243. Both are very adequate for pronghorn out to as far as I can shoot. I'm not attracted to the short magnums because the ammunition may not be very commonly available. Additionally, I have found that my rifles are rather finicky as to what ammunition I feed them. My .25-06 shoots 3" groups with some ammunition but 1.25" groups with Hornady Custom 117 grain boat tail soft point cartridges (maybe better, but my limit is 1.25" at any rate). The .243 may shoot a little better than this with Winchester SuperX 100 grain soft points, but shoots 2.5" to 3.5" groups with other ammunition. I fear that if I had a short magnum with two commercial loadings, maybe neither of these loads would agree with the rifle I happened to have. Of course, if you reload you can tune your loads to your rifle and avoid this limitation of commercially available ammunition.

Congrats Rondo, that's a mighty sweet . Didn't know they grew 'em that big in Texas? Nice way to end the Texas Grand Slam.
