Any suggestions on hunting lions without dogs. We just bought some land in area 20 of Colorado. I saw a lion about 20 yards from the house. The neighbor has found at least 4 deer kills from lions. I would like to thin them out.

can hardly killem with out hounds

raz-n-co you might try calling with a predator call (distressed rabbit), if there is still fresh sign on your property.

fresh snow and a good fawn in distress call are your best odds.If you have enough land accsess in the area you can usually find a guy with good dogs that will be willing to come out and run a cat for you if you cover his gas ect.

Yeah you might want to try a fawn cry of disstres. I v called in cat this way and it works pritty good. also a woodpecker disstres or a high pitch bird call works well with cougars and bobcats. make sure when calling cats have good camo thay can see really good.

I take it that since your in Colorado, you have alot of Elk running around. I would say your best bet is to locate places with tracks and droppings, or places where you have seen an actuall cat, sit in these places and make mews and chirps with a elk cow/calf call (I recommend any of the several cow calls made by Wayne Carlton and Carlton Calls), switch between the cow and calf call trying to sound like a lost calf trying to locate its mother, also try looking for cats along well traveled elk trails, sometimes cougars hang out on the edges of these game trails in hopes of jumping out and snatching an easy meal. One last thing to do is to stake out a cougar kill, cougars get a bad rap for being wastefull animals because people often see alot of partially eaten cat kills, the truth is that a cougar will kill two elk or deer at a time, and will take one and sometimes dig around it and cover it up with dirt or hide it to save for later and will slowly consume the first one eating little bits at a time and stopping to take naps, cougars have been known to return to a carcass up to a week after killing it, so if you find a partially devoured deer or elk carcass, especially one that is partially barried, or in an area that is ridden with cat tracks, spend a couple of hours staking it out, just make sure you yourself aren't being staked out by a cougar, because they usually don't wander to far from a fresh kill.
