I signed up to go to Manitoba for my first moose hunt this fall. We will fly up to the Churchill river and use boats from a tent camp. I have a 9.3x62 CZ rifle and some nosler partitions that I have shot enough to get comfortable with.
Forum: What is the most important thing that I should know about moose hunting before I go (in your opinion)? |

Don't let him get to the water. You'll play hell trying to dress him.
Beside.....
The toilet paper gets wet. |

| with what you are shooting, it should freeze him on the spot with no thought of going to the water, therefore you can dress and skin him standing up. |

| Yeah don't forget the buttwipe and even more important don't forget the bug spray. If it is anything like back home those no-see-ums are the devil and they'll let you have it. |

| Toilet paper, bug spray, and "don't drop them in the water" Good advice, I will try and remember to do all three. This will probably be my only trip like this that I can afford, so I am going prepared.  |

Why would you want to derss a moose? Don't you really want to undress it? And it would make sense not to dress or undress in the water. But if you don't get the toilet paper wet, how will you flush it away? And wouldn't a nice Glade scented mist smell better than bug spray after flushing?

Bug dope, more bug dope, ankle fit hip boots are critical in the wet -I'd ask your outfitter what the land is like, mosquito head net.
Did I mention you might want bug dope?
Good luck and happy hunting |

Get a ThermaCell to take with you to use if you set in one spot very long. I have been useing one all summer camping and fishing. Once you get it going about 20 minutes you are free of bugs. :D
Wal-Mart carry them and if you don't have one close by you can get them online. Here is the website.

you get 4 hours on a mat or 12 hours on a refill.
Going into bug country I wouldn't leave home without one. |

Learn to call...that will be your best advantage. get some tapes or a movie if you've never heard a moose before, practice with your hands just bawling and Grunts. That will probably give you your best shot at getting close.
And as for the TP...thats a close 2nd 8)
And don't worry about the water, thats what a winch and ATV is for :thumbsup1: |

| :thumbsup1: I went. I shot a 57" moose. The trip was by floatplane and boats. I did not need the insect repellant all week -- it was too cold already. I used all the TP I had. My guide told me to shoot whenever I got a clear target, never mind the water. He was excited! The guide called in the moose, and then we got the outfitter to help carry it to the boat. |
