HA HA! Scare the $hit out of you?

Probably ten years ago I was hunting pheasant about day break and I had a damn big barn owl come out of this tree towards me (I hadn't seen it before). Made a racket and scared the piss out of me.

I dropped down to a knee, put the gun to my shoulder, and stared whirling around trying to get a lock on the noise. When I finally figured out what the noise (it had land in another tree) was I felt pretty stupid. I think the owl with its big yellow eyes was chuckling at my absurd reaction...

yeah if you dont have a dog to point or flush the birds, ruffed grouse can be hard to hunt in densly covered areas

Hi

I’m hunting grouse in the northern parts of Sweden. There is two types of grouse first the Ptarmigan and second the willow grouse. http://www.geocities.com/ja_nne_2000/ is where I’m going for a week in a few days, press jakt = hunting and bilder = pictures to se pictures of the grouse and of the area. In Sweden are we only aloud to use small caliber rifles (maximum a 22Hornet) or a Shotgun when hunting for grouse during the winter.

/Peter

Here in Idaho, we have several types of grouse. The Sage Grouse (aka Sagehen) and Sharptail grouse live in the desert/sagebrush country. Ruffed and Spruce grouse live in the creek bottoms, and along borders between thick brush and trees. The Blue Grouse is usually found high on the ridge tops. All of these species can appear dumb at times, but it is my experience that you probably only see 1 in 10 of those dumb old birds that just stand there. Their best defense mechanism is to stand still and hope that you don't see them. They are about the best eating birds around in my opinion. I usually carry a sling shot and some marbles in my pack when hunting mule deer and elk and often times have fresh grouse for dinner at camp.

Your right Mattravj, of the game birds I have eaten, grouse is the best.

You must be a good shot with the slingshot! Welcome aboard.

Peter thanks for posting the link. I didn't realize that Ptarmigan were related to grouse. Hope you made out well with the hunting...

This is kind off the subject right now but I just had two questions I wanted to ask.

First: Is it legal to hunt Crows on private property?

Second: On this property(Dads friend) theres Almond tree's full of dove, so in the upcoming dove season is it legal there and what advise do you have to give on hunting Dove?

Some states have a spring crow season, so it might be legal. I have read that crow hunting can be pretty challenging.

You can call your fish and game to find out if and when there is a season.

Umm....welll.....were not really sure if its legal or not but...To late now.

Also about it being hard...not true. We would hide under that almond tree's over hanging branches and then use a dieing rabbit call...works like a charm.
First they circle the area then start getting lower and lower to try and find the rabbit. Then when there 30yards above you(BANG)! I used my friends 870 remington shotgun to see how I liked it cause Im thinking of getting one and I was very impressed only thing was that its HEAVY so carrying it around a lot is tiring.

Well probably better check the regulations, Lever. While I have no idea what CA regs are, taking game out of season can get you into serious hot water.....

Sounds like you have a good techinque worked out for hunting them though. Never hunted crow, but will keep that in mind if I ever do.
