I have handgun hunted deer since about '81. Haven't used a shotgun since I got my first S&W Model 57 (.41Mag). I bought a second Model 57 a few years later because it had a longer barrel (8-3/8" vs. 6") and it had a scope mount on it. It's outfitted with an Aimpoint 1000 red dot sight. I didn't want to drill my first Model 57. I handload for it but also buy factory 210g jacketed soft points when I find them for a fair price. The .41 works great on deer and would be OK for bear. If I were to do it all over again, I would try to find a nice .44 Mag. Ammo is a lot easier to find and is usually cheaper. Here's proof that a .41 works good on deer:

My favorite is a T/C G2 with a 16" barrel, w/muzzeltamer. .445 Supermag loaded with 300 gr. XTPs. Great Whitetail gun, going to try it on Blackbear this fall.

I use a Savage Striker in .308 put a Burris 4-12 handgun scope on it. I shot Deer and Elk with this rig, It shoots just as well as any rifle I own off the bench.

I have been hunting with T/C Contender Handguns since 1982. No they are not for everyone, but they can be super accurate and extremely fun to shoot.

I use a 14" Stainless-Steel .22 LR Match Contender with a 3x12x Burris LER Handgun Scope for all my small game, small varmint hunting needs as well as Indoor Bench Rest Competition in the winter months at a local indoor shooting range. This handgun keeps me shooting year round.

I also have a 14" Stainless-Steel .223 Remington Contender with a 3x12x LER Burris LER Handgun Scope for my larger varmint / coyote hunting needs. I have had a lot of .223 Contender Barrels over the years, some 10" Bull Barrels but most have been 14" Barrels. Some were blued while others were stainless-steel. The one I currently have is the most accurate Contender Barrel I have ever had. With it's perferred load shooting 55gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips loaded with H-4895 Powder in Military LC Brass with Remington 7 1/2 Primers I shot 6 - 3 shot groups from the bench at 100 yards this spring. I was testing my scope for point of impact shift at different magnifications between 6x to 12x. The smallest 3 shot group that day measured slightly under 1/4", with the average going slightly under 1/2".

For Hunting Whitetail Deer I have used a number of cartridges over the years, including: .223 Remington, 6mm-223, 6mm T/CU, .250 Savage, 7-30 Waters, .30-30 Winchester, .30-30 Ackley Improved and .44 Remington Magnum. Currently I am shooting a 14" Stainless-Steel 7-30 Waters Contender Handgun with a 2.5x8x Weaver Handgun Scope. The preferred load is 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with H-4895 Powder in reformed Remington .30-30 Winchester Brass with CCI-BR2 Primers. This load pushes the 120gr. Nosler to 2436 FPS average velocity with low extreme spread and standard deviation numbers. Recently I shot 5 - 3 shot groups (once I settled on this load) from the bench at 100 yards. The average was .969" center to center.

I have been thinking I might like to try a departure from the norm (well at least for me) and am considering a 7 1/2" Barreled Scope Revolver. I just can't seem to make up my mind if I want to go with a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt or a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Magnum. I think either would be a nice addition to the Contenders I hunt with.

As I stated up front, hunting with Single Shot Contenders is not for everyone. I have found the best way to pack them is to carry them on a sling just like I did with Rifles when I owned and hunted with Rifles. A person has to be prepaired to make a good shot as a follow up shot is not as quick as with a repeater. However I have learned to carry spare ammo on a wrist ammo holder (on my shooting wrist) and believe it or not these single shots can be reloaded quicker than a person would imagine (but I would still want a repeater if in country where things could bite back) with practice.

Not sure if I helped or confused you. I for one like the versatility of the interchangeable barrels of the T/C System. I also like the range afforded buy some of the cartridges available in the T/C's.

Good luck with whatever you decide to go with. Practice, practice and practice some more and you will be rewarded for your efforts.

Larry
