I'm a long-time deer hunter and a 2 year old bear hunter. I'm looking into trying predator calls this fall. Any suggestions?
I'll be rifle hunting at 6500' in the So. California Mountains where it is illegal to bait, I don't know anyone with a hound, and there are generally very few bear hunters. I've scouted and located scat and tracks between a bunch of oaks and leading up to higher country.

Hi Blastmaster, welcome aboard!
Check out this article we put up last month:
Fall Black Bear Basics
It covers black bear hunting in regions that don't allow baiting and predator calls are discussed.
Hope that helps and good luck! |

| I just got the call, and I have never heard anything quite so...so...well horible. I think the bears only come to see if they can get you to shut-up! |

Well any legal way you get the bear to you is a good way right?
Seriously, it should sound bad (high pitched squeal of sorts)...
It is supposed to imitate a small mammal in distress (injured, stuck, etc). The bear being an opportunist likes the sound of any easy catch.
You may attract in other scavanger/oppurtunists too...
Happy squealing!
