Hi All
Jeff here reminded me of the ferry from Homer to Kodiak being cheaper than a flight.
In 2006 we are trying to do a caribou/moose drop hunt. Hoping to hunt 10 days. Hoping to have 3 weeks time available to do this all. In laws want to fish down towards Homer before we leave and at least pan for gold once. Anyway I love the looks of the Sitka deer.
Time wise and will it work? Can we get over to Kodiak quick enough on the ferry AND have time to actually get a deer without a guide in a day or two and then get back. I'm thinking we'll only have about 5-6 days to spare after the main hunt and we'll be flying out of Anchorage. Or can it be done somewhere else along the way. Thats assuming the season is open mid to end Sept.
Thanks, Jeff |

The Ferry ride is 9 hours and costs around $75 one way(without a berth). A vehicle will cost you another $100+ one way. It usually runs twice a week, but once a month runs out to Dutch Harbor and that takes around a week. A one-way air ticket on Era is about $125 and takes an hour from Anchorage.
Deer season runs from Aug 1 - Oct 31 on the road-system and you can shoot 1 buck(3 bucks off the road system). You will need to hike back in a mile or two to find a decent buck on the road system. That time of year the area between alpine and alder brush around 1,000 feet is good. Don't let the word "road-system" fool you, because you can be 10 miles from any road and still be considered on the road-system. On a side note the silver fishing will be red hot that time of year. |
