Anti-Hunters Attempt
To End All Hunting on Cape Cod

Anti-hunting groups are seeking to amend their recently filed lawsuit in an attempt to end all hunting on Cape Cod National Seashore. In their original case, only pheasant hunting was targeted.

Yesterday, animal rights groups including the Fund for Animals, Humane Society of the United States and Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals amended their legal complaint to ban pheasant hunting on Cape Cod to include all hunting on the 43,000-acre national recreational area.

In early October, animal rights groups asked for a temporary restraining order to immediately stop this season’s pheasant hunt. United States District Court Judge Patti Saris rejected the anti’s request. The latest tactic may have been in response to that loss.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation is a defendant intervenor in the case, working to protect outdoor sports on this federal land holding. A loss of hunting at Cape Cod could affect hunting on federal land across the nation. Joining the Foundation in the case are the Massachusetts Sportsmen’s Council Inc., Barnstable County League of Sportsmen’s Clubs and sportsman Michael Veloza of Manomet, Massachusetts.

“This suit is the latest action in Massachusetts by these groups whose goal it is to stop hunting,” said Wayne MacCallum, Director of Massachusetts Fish and Wildlife. “The past has shown us that if they win at places like Cape Cod, they will not stop there.”

Thousands of sportsmen hunt deer, upland game and migratory waterfowl on Cape Cod National Seashore each year. Seasons mirror those that are in effect across Massachusetts.

Additional information is forthcoming from the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation on this issue.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation protects and defends America’s wildlife conservation programs and the pursuits – hunting, fishing and trapping – that generate the money to pay for them. The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation is responsible for public education, legal defense and research. Its mission is accomplished through several distinct programs coordinated to provide the most complete defense capability possible.
