Here we go again, but I thought it would start some conversation, and maybe some new light on the subject if there is any left.

Hey Caveman, good to see you around again.
As for me, I typically use a 30-06 running at or near a max load.
When do you hit the field for your elk hunt this fall? |

| I usually use a 243 but this is too light for elk. So I use a 30-06 for elk. |

It's been a number of years since I have put in for a rifle hunt for Elk. Kind of gone bow crazy I guess.
But I used to use (my wife still does) a Browning A-Bolt in 30-06 shooting Federal Premium 180gr Nosler Partitions. She will be using it this October on her Elk hunt here in Az.

December 14th? Wow does the snow fly by then down there, usually western Colorado is covered by then.
I go second season (Oct) elk in western Colorado. |

| I have never hunted elk but I think my 300 RUM would make a fine calibre for this type of hunting. |

| Up until recently I have used both a .270 and a 300 mag for mule deer and elk. I just traded for a .264 winchester magnum in a limited model remington 700 bdl ss. My friends all have the same caliber, and I have never in my lifetime seen better performance out of a rifle. It is long, flat-shooting, and will make for a great elk gun. |

| I too agree with the 264 win mag.It is a real flat shooting cartridge. I shoot 140gr Nosler Partition ahead of 61 gr of MAGPRO. This year I shot a nice bull at 325yds.It really makes a lot of noise but the recoil is nothing |

| What would a 30-30 with 150gr. hollow point bullet do to an elk or deer?At about 100-200 yards. |

| I shoot a sako .300 whby mag. what a tack driver with the 180 grain barnes-x. I have shot elk at 300 yards and they droped right in there tracks. the bullet has 98% weight retention. this is a great set-up. |

| Lever - at 100yds it would probably work, At 200yds it probably wouldn't. Elk hunters might correct me on this but I think the rule of thumb for elk hunting is 1500 ft/lbs of energy is reccomended. And I don't think that you can count on most shots being 100yds in elk hunting like you can with deer. |
