Also fall Black bear tags need to be purchased by Aug 31 for fall black bear. Remember you need to first pass the Montana bear ID test fwp.state.mt.us

Hey Gunslinger338,

I had read about the new black/brown bear testing system last fall. The Montana FWP announced it was a big success. Did you have to go through this testing?

Sounds like they go through a lot of trouble in Montana to assure that a grizzly doesn't get shot even by accident.

Yeah my oldest daughter and I took our test last January. My youngest took hers' Sunday so she could get her tag by the cut off date. She was the 40145 person to pass the test. We worked at the fair this last weekend in the FWP shooting center;people could take the test there also. There was just one person after the other taking it. In my opinion the test does two things: 1st it apeases the non-hunting public that the hunters can tell the difference between black and grizzly. 2nd and I feel most important that the hunting public either cannot or at times cannot tell the difference between black and grizzly and should not take the shot if they are not sure. It's even one of our 3 basic hunting rules; Be sure of your target and beyoud. But the test is short and simple 15 questions you can only miss 3. You can take the test as many times as you need.

Interesting, sounds like the test has gone well. I had read that you could take it on-line as well.

Even though it is probably a hassle to have everybody take the test, I agree that it probably does cut down on mistaken brown bear kills. Around here, we have a lot of mistaken cattle/horse kills every year. Maybe we need a "This is a COW! Don't shoot things that go MOOOO" test too...

Sure would be nice to see the grizzly make a come back to their native range. However there are so many people now than in the 1800's, the grizzly/human encounter rate would go up like a rocket if grizzlies were restored to their full range. Unfortunately grizzlies will do more damage (owing to their larger size and "disposition") than black bears too.
