I am looking into buying a crossbow. I have heard conflicting sales pitches from the guys that are trying to sell me the x bow that they have. I am not sure what to think. One guy is telling me the pros of the x bow with recurve limbs (ease of use and less parts to go bad) outweigh the pros of the compound style bows. Another dealer looked at me when I said that and said.....are you crazy?
What is the best x bow for the money and how do I figure out whats best for my situation.
I will use it for whitetails mostly but I would like to hunt water buffalo with it too. |

Here's my opinion to your question. I have been archery hunting for 24 years all together, more so with the crossbow for going on 18 years this coming season after an accident (injured shoulder). Anyways, as for the information you are asking. I' ve owned my share of crossbows over them years. I didn't have much luck with finding a compound crossbow that didn't have to go to the pro-shop, and that's IF you can find one in the area you're hunting, or for some reason or another ie: broken string/cable, loose cam, or worse having the crossbow sit in the pro-shop waiting for parts so they can repair it. I've honestly been there. Needless to say, I missed out on days in the field for them reasons. I now own an Excalibur Paradox 175# (compound) and a Excalibur ExoMax 225# (recurve). They are both great crossbows and I never had a problem with the Paradox, however when I go moose hunting the recurve crossbow is my #1 choice to bring along with me. As in moose country it's pretty tough to find a pro-shop so you can get your crossbow fixed when you should be hunting, and that's IF you can find one! The Excalibur recurve crossbows are very reliable, deadly accurate, a very crisp trigger, you can easily maitain them yourself right on the spot. If you happen to break a string in the field it only takes a minute to install another string, and you're back in business with no need of re-sighting in. Funny but your reasons for likeing the recurve are the exact reasons the guy that was trying to sell me the excaliber recurve x-bow told me. In Pa. there is a 200# max draw weight. I am leaning toward the recurve at this point. |

I just up-graded my recurve crossbow from my 200# Exomag to the new 225# ExoMax for the camo pattern and nothing more. The 200# Exomag is a great choice for what you want it for, and with a heavy enough bolt/broadhead that model will be fine for water buffalo. I know of American Bison that have been taken down with the Exomag. As we all know, it's all in the shot placement. |
