We put in for first rifle season bull tags. We selected units 11 or 22. We plan on camping. Within each unit, there are many units to chose from. Can anyone please give any info on any of these units. We never hunted CO, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks
Gene

Welcome kcaste!

Here's a thread that just recently discussed unit 11. Unit 22 is similar in terrain, but much larger overall.

Good luck!

Thanks cowgal,

If the weather is warm, is it possible to get to the elk in the higher elevations?
If so, what unit?

For early season elk hunting, I would probably try to stick to areas in the Routt or White River National Forest areas. Both of them however have wilderness areas, which of course means no motorized vehicles of any kind, you can only access on foot or on horse.

Unit 11 & 22 have fantastic elk populations, but you usually don't see them until they move down from the high country, which is of course after the first snow flies.
