While at the range last weekend there was a fella that had a 1851 Navy .36 cal BP pistol. He let me shoot it a few times and I was impressed with it. Now I am thinking about getting me one.
He said he only paid $250.00 for the pistol and all the accessories needed.

Anybody have any experience with these? Comments?

Was curious as to if you'd ever gotten one? Those 1851 Navy's are sweet little pistols. Have had a couple in my day. These days though, I shoot the 1860 Army model. Really like that model but doesn't have that feel of the 1851 .36 caliber.

I've had my Dad's 1851 Navy BP revolver for a long time. My dad bought it but never fired it. I am now getting the equiptment together to fire it (had to order balls and nipple wrench). I am new to black power also. Anyone have any good advise or some good websites to check out?

It is a .36 Caliber, another question. the Uberti web site says that it takes .380 size balls. I am not 100% sure that it is an Uberti but I think it is. Is this the right size for all .36 Caliber 1851 Navy modes?

Should be a .375 diameter roundball. Don't recall seeing any .380 molds.
Advice...3f Goex powder. Might start at 15grs. and work up to 30grs. Use a wonder wad on top of the powder or grease on top of the bullet. I've had 2 cross-fires in my day due to not doing that. Last was about 20 yrs. ago. :)
I also carry a small bottle of glass cleaner with me while shooting. When it starts getting hard to rotate the cylinder I give the front of the cylinder a good wipe...then good to go again. Once home...take it apart and clean it with hot soapy water, dry it well and oil it. You'll be good to go. Prior to loading for the next session...wipe all oil out of cylinder and nipples. Good luck

Lyman doesn't show a .380 mold. LEE might have one...just haven't seen it in any catalogs. But the .375 is popular as an order item and in the loading stats. I'm thinking that .380 might be hard to load. What size roundballs were you able to order?

I ordered .380. That's all the gun shop I ordered them from had (next to .360).

Just found on my lunch hour today an "all Black Powder" gun shop who has .375's in stock. I am going to bring my revolver in and let him look it over.

If the .380's are to big I guess I'll get me a good sling shot and use then for that!

They won't be too big...just harder loading. You'll shave off a ring loading it just like you would a .375 only a mite more.

No I have not gotten me one yet but am in the serious "looking" phase now.
