Has anyone from West Virginia, or the surrouding states, ever seen a mammal referred to as an Abaguchie, which was supposedly imported from Costa Rica in the mid-1990s, to kill rattlesnakes and coyotes...

Maybe its an urban legend. Although sometimes an invasive species is controlled with a predator that cannot reproduce. An example is the Tiger Muskie is sometimes used to control certain fresh water invasive fish.

The abaguchie is found in the children's book "Boys Against Girls" by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and is described as a cat-like mammal. I think the fellas at F & S are playing a joke. Furthermore, the author of the excerpt is A.F. Ledbetter.... (April Fools). I know, I wanted to go in search for it as well if only for a brief moment. The Smithsonian Institute has a database of 4,625 mammals world-wide, but no abaguchie.

Nibbla is correct. You have just been handed your first April fools joke. I can tell you as a reference librarian in WV's capital city we've been fielding this question a LOT. It is from Naylor's "Boys against Girls.

Thank's Nibbla and WVlib for the insight... I thought the picture in F & S April 2004 Magazine looked a little fake, and it made me wonder if there really is such a beast...

So there you have it, I've just been served a full plater of April Fools from the "Cryptozoolgical Guide to American Mammalia..."

Thanks, I just saw the picture in Aprils' Field & Stream. It looked odd to say the least. April Fools

Here in West Virginia we call them mountain apes, however if you try to hunt this elusive animal it will make you look like an ***.

Did anyone but me notice that the elusive abaguchie looks suspiciously like a mount made from an whitetail deer's rear end?
I have seen several examples of "abaguchies" made this way.

I wandered into this forum because I was looking to see if this is a real animal. My son found an article in Field & Stream with a picture of this "Abaguchie". I think it's a joke. It was the April issue!
