My brother and I are going to drive to AK this fall ,taking a pop up camper up and back. we would like some sugestions on which gmu to select for an air boat drop off hunt.we are both in our mid fifty range and one of us has had hart surgery last year.dont mind a little work but altabove 6000ft could be a strain..lower river area's or rolling hills would suit us better than the mountains..We have contacted a transporter but he is reluctant to suggest an area he is out of Wassila area but basically said he could take us anywhere there is a stream...

Frank,

I can't be much of help with rafts and hunting from rivers and streams and such, but I live in Wasilla (gmu 14A). Unit 14 as a whole has a pretty high density of moose. However, the more "popular" spots in this unit are heavily hunted. Though, most of those areas are hunted by people who rarely get out of the truck or off their 4-wheelers. I would suggest you and your brother buy a black bear tag. There's a good chance you will encounter one and it doesn't require a guide to hunt black bear. Feel free to email me with more information.

Frank,
Ever thought about being dropped off via floatplane & floating a stream in a raft?

Airboats are popular in the minto flats & 20 mile areas...but jetboats & airplanes are by far more popular. Rafts work swell.

Moose are rarely found above 5000' in AK...there's only sheep food that high.
