Well, my new treestand arrived yesterday. After using an old Warren & Sweat for about 15 years I broke down and ordered a Lone Wolf Alfa Climber. I must have had ESP or something now that I've drawn an Elk tag.
My old one served me faithfully but it just started to creak to much when I shifted my weight in the tree. It is all bolted together and I think the holes just started to get to sloppy for the bolts. I'd take it apart every year and put new nylon washers on and all but after a couple uses it was right back where it was.
Anyway, had my eye on the Lone Wolf for a couple years. Hope I like it because I'm stuck with it for a while. I'll let you guys know after I use it a few times for Deer this August.
What do you guys use if any?

Unit5a,
No tree stand for me. Not that I wouldn't mind trying one, just that where I hunt there is rarely much taller than scrub oak.
There are some trees, but I'm not sure I would trust my health to their spindly girth.

I feel pretty lucky actually. The tall pine forests are not that far from me. I hunt up there in the summer months and do the tree stand thing. Although I do mix it up a bit.
In the winter seasons I hunt the desert areas. There is actually quit a bit of cover if you know how to use it, but not many trees worthy of a stand. At least a climber stand anyway.

Doesn't everybody have a hunt in the summer?
Yep, archery deer and turkey in the August/September timeframe. I usually don't do the desert to much in the summer unless it is overcast, or raining some. Just to brutal...
I'll usually do the weekends and maybe tie a day off to it a couple of times. The family will join me a weekend or two for camping as well. Good Fun.

If I had it my way I'd be hunting in October, November. It's just to hot here in the summer. I would even go so far as to trade my left nut for a winter hunt..... I alraedy have three kids, so I dont think my wife would mind, hell, she may even encourage IT! Well I better stop complaining, there is a storm starting to brew over my head!

Doesn't CA have some late season offerings for archery?

| yes they do, but it's a draw only type deal. I use to put in for them, but after many years (10) I gave up. The system they use is asinine. They are suppose to change over to A 'better' draw system next year. We shall see. Untill then I'll stick with the over the counter tags, and keep a nice tan. |

Oh I didn't realize the draw situation was so tight there in CA. It really stinks when you want to go hunting and there is not enough tags to go around. There is a guy that posted in the rocky mtn forum (gunslinger) that waited 25 years to get a Montana goat tag! Sheesh, glad he finally got one though.
I understand why you hunt in the summer now, I would too if that was my only choice.
Come to CO this, there practically giving away elk tags this summer. The elk are everywhere... Unfortunately the state recently jacked up the costs for non-residents though. (and then they wonder why they don't have enough hunters...) |

I use a Viper treestand, and although they can be nice, I prefer sitting on the ground.
I always end up getting caught climbing the tree I suspect, because I have only shot 1 of my 3 deer from a stand. And that was in a thick area.
I agree, where else can you take a nap? LOL |

 Yeah you owe me one Maineguide...
Chuck, what do you mean by "getting caught climbing a tree you suspect"? By the way I know what you mean (in your other posts) about school getting in the way of hunting. When I was in college I rarely had time to hunt, being that the fall was busy with school work.

It's not school, it's just a 4 hour exam.
Haven't you ever heard that you can be caught climbing the tree? If there's a deer within a hundred yards, and it see's your movement, it WILL watch you, and never come near you.
Your putting yourself in an easier place for the deer to see you when you gain altitude.
Some people prefer going up quiet and slow, some just zip up the tree.
I prefer the "Get it over with" method hehe
