Mostly I will use a truck to get in within a few miles of the game. Then we'll hike in from their, using whatever stealth and cunning we have. Usually this just means finding a good valley with coverage and waiting for game to start moving around. I always hunt rifle.

I would like to try horse back, seems like that would be a great way to really get into the deep woods. Unfortunately, I don't have horses and I'm allergic too them...

I'm a walker and stalker most of the time, but use a blind in the morning. My car becomes a four wheel drive truck during the hunting season. I take through some rough ground as long as the area is not muddy. I have had deer on top and in the trunk... makes for a great relationship when I arrive home. Wifes just have no sense of humor.

A car that becomes a four-wheeler? Deer mounted to the hood?

Let me guess the car is the family vehicle, if so your lucky your aren't dead! I can just imagine the look on your wife's face coming home with a bloody, muddy, family sedan at 3:00 AM.

Bet the kids have a blast though.

Ugh...memories. I took two other guys with me in a Honda Accord hatchback on a hunt in SW Montana once. Drove that sucker up several miles of logging road and started hiking. Got a nice mulie as the sun started to go down, and we dragged it half a mile or so to the car, where I discovered that I had a flat tire.

One tire change later, there we were -- three big guys in a Japanese hatchback with hooves hanging out the back gate, scraping our way back down all those miles of logging roads in the dark, with half the ground clearance we had when we came up due to the extra weight and donut spare tire. That was a looooong drive home.

Needless to say, I have a truck now.

I've got to hand it to you car hunters. I for one would not be so bold. When I start driving some rutted up trail, I get to gawking out the side window, scanning for game, or just staring at the scenery.

I might do alright for awhile in a car, but before long I would start drifting, then "whamm, bamm, thank you ma'm" the right front wheel would hit a rock, I'd slip into the rut, and the vehicle would come to a grinding halt. High-centered in the sticks. Probably puncture my oil pan while I was at it.

Well, I was about 20 yrs old at the time, and you do a lot of things in college that ain't too bright. But then, it was either use the car or stare at the mountains from afar.

Good Gravey! Stupid but more of a rush than a direct shot of epinephrine!

In the fictional border trilogy by Cormac McCarthy he describes a mexican coyote hunt that is conducted by horse back with lassos. Chasing the coyotes, then lassoing them to make the kill. Does anybody know if this hunting method ever is/was used, or is this just a flight of fancy for Cormac? (I won't even touch the issue of fair chase...)

My immediate reaction was that I didn't know coyotes could go that fast.

But the second thought was that I definitely don't feel so bad anymore. My donut limited us to 50.
