Rather than continue to talk about Javelina in the Elk forum I'll respond here.
I don't use calls or anything for hunting Javelina. In fact I'm usually hunting deer at the same time and look to the Javelina as a bonus since for me both seasons are at the same time. I use binoculars to "glass 'em up" and then stalk them. Their vision is not that good, but like anything plan your stalk with the wind in your favor. Finding fresh sign for them is pretty easy as they are not dainty, travel in groups, and kind of like to rip things up. It is surprizing to me how quietly a group of them can move through the desert though. Sometimes even when you can't see them, you can smell them. They tend to stay within a given territory and if you've found them once, you will find them again.
We usually use the meat for stew.

Interesting, I figured these javelina would be too sensitive (vision, sense of smell, hearing) to stalk. I still have a hard time getting my head around the idea of hunting pigs in herds, just didn't think such things existed...

Thanks for the information. It sounds like the combo deer+javelina is kind of like what we do in CO with coyote. The DOW has been giving out free tags to those that have a big game tag the last few years. So if you happen to run across a coyote you can bag it in the process...

You don't need a tag for a Coyote here, just a hunting license. You can hunt them year round and at the seminars I've gone to they encourage you to do so. I guess they are a little out of control and doing a number on the new born Antelope and all. I've taken quite a few with a rifle/handgun but they've been a little to sharp for me with the bow. I have had a couple of shots but come up empty.

Yes, it does sound like the same situation you have in AZ with coyotes that we have here in CO. If you have a big game tag, then you can bag a few coyotes, although I'm not sure what the limits are.

A few years ago (1994?) they banned most types of trapping in CO. Since then it seems like the coyote, bear, fox populations have exploded. Some say that the extra predation is the root cause of mule deer population decline over the last few years in CO. Although I think that is still being debated...

Have the pronghorn been in decline in AZ?

You don't need a tag to hunt coyote in CO. Just need a small game license. There is no daily limit or bag limit. In fact our county has a $7 bounty on their ears. Kill as many as you can, they always seem to make more.

Thanks for pointing that out, Schemy, it looks like I fumbled what I was trying to say. Your right, you don't specifically need a coyote tag but that wasn't what I was trying to say.

Rather if you have a big game tag (unfilled) you could take coyote as well, regardless of whether you had a small game license or not (in a sense that is a "free tag" although that isn't the best choice of words).
