Hi
I research Thylacoleo carnifex (marsupial Lion) and big cats here in Australia.
A few weeks back at a known big cat hotspot this print was found of which I did a plaster cast and also took photographs.
We think its a big cat any ideas what one??

I'm not a track expert by any means but I have run across cougar tracks from time to time.
All I can say is that it looks cat like (lack of claw prints) as you suggest. I can't make out enough of the back pad to say much else.
This site has a lot of cougar tracks for you to compare. Good luck, maybe somebody else can help.
By the way, interesting web site you have. |

Welcome aboard yowies.
Very interesting articles in your website.
It would have been greatly helpful if there was some sort of size comparison item near the track.
Living in florida I have had the privilage of seeing a real live wild panther in person. Not as large as I imagined them to be but certainly large enough to intimadate me. No mistaking one for a house cat or Bobcat.
The panther I saw left tracks in the sand that were not all that clear. One thing I remember thinking is that the tracks looked so fake and very large for the size of the animal, about the same size as a mans clenched fist. Much larger than a large dog track.
I certainly am not an expert tracker or feline professor but from your picture I'd say you have a cat roaming around. How large I cant tell for the lack of size comparision item. |

Hi
The print is 12cms long by 10cms wide.
2 and a half cm's='s 1 inch.
So just under 5 inches long by 4 inches wide if that helps.
Yeah Ive seen leopards and they are smaller than most people realise. |

My dad's been hunting cougar since I was born so I've seen tons of cougar tracks!! And that does look like a cougar track if you even have cougars I don't know but it's definitely a large cat it's hard to tell much more without actually being there if my dad was there in person he'd be able to tell ya about how big it was & everything. Besides a cougar or some other large cat the only other thing it could be is a mutant house cat!! ahhh run away!!

5 inches X 4 inches.......
Yeah, I'd say that you have a large Cat roaming around.
Thats a little larger than the Panther tracks I have seen and they were in very soft sand which makes em not very clearly defined.
Cougar and Panthers are closely related. In fact the FWC has cross bred Cougars and Panthers and released the offspring into the wild in an effort to bring the Florida Panther back from the brink of extinction.
Get yourself a Game Camera, or Trail monitor camera and set it up in some hotspot. Mabe you'll get a photograph of whatever it is. |

Yowies, I enjoyed viewing your site!! I wish I could help you with the cat print but I'm far from an expert... If you figure out your mysterious track, write in, and let us know what type of cat it is. I'm interested!

Hi
Im leaning towards a Black Melanistic Leopard, as there gentic makeup can cause these type of traits in a print.
Ive now discounted a Puma and almost discounted a Black Jaguar.
Not certain but more than I was when I posted it.
If you figure out your mysterious track, write in, and let us know what type of cat it is. I'm interested!

Hi
thanks for your imput...
We have identified it as the extinct Marsupial Lion (thylacoleo carnifex) of which myy friend Rex has many versions of the same species.
The identical digits was what first made me realise it might not be a cat.
And after 4 weeks im positive now its a T.c
Thanks for all your imputs, (it was from all of your posts that I could discount things) unless something different comes up, im saying it is defintely a T.c print.

Yowies - How old is the cat print if this suspected Marsupial Lion is extinct?
That would be interesting if you found a track to one, of what might be the last, of the thylacoleo carnifex!

Hi
The Marsupial Lion apparently died out on the Mainland approx 12,000 yearts B.P (Before -present) Also it was related to the Marsupials not the feline family.
This is all over Australia though; not just here in Sydney.
Its either a completely new cat-like animal unknown to science or its an evolved T.c.
The prints though show not catlike traits, no animal here has the same digits like these show.
As for the age of the hundreds of prints found, it ranges from small cub sized to huge adult 25cms long.
Some of the attacks on animals are horrific.
The entire flesh stripped to the bone in what appears to be long incisors that just rip the animal to shreds.
Entire organs are just eaten in one go and there doesn't appear to be a struggle nearby these dead animals which shows it either dropped out of a tree or it just was so stealthy.

It doesn't look like a cat print to me. The toes are too long and elongated. Plus they are not soft enough and too much weight is being put on them.
There are dinasour tracks in the western US that look as fresh as your photo. But that doesn't mean any are walking around out there. |
