When should I stop puting out bait? I have a couple of spots that havent been hit yet and each time I go I bring more food. How much is enough. What I have been doing is pulling out the old stuff for the birds and other animals to eat and putting the new stuff back under the logs. If I was to leave the old doughnuts under the logs, how long should I wait before I replace it? I would imagine that once it rains (4days out of the last 7) I should at least take the wet ones out and replace those at least.

Leave it there. the old stuff. it will not hurt leaving it there. I have put out old stuff and have had it been hit. You might want to find another place to bait if not hitting it. Do you know of any other bait sites close or how close are you baiting to each site? Also do you have any bait sites being hit? I will put my bait out and leave it and every time I go into the site I piss all around it to keep foxes coyotes and anything else from getting my bait. My 11 yr old son likes to go so he can piss all around it. he is pretty funny about it.

go to the feed store and pick-up a 5 gallon bucket of feed molasses and pour on your old bait. THEY WILL COME !!!! the bears will smell that molasses for miles. just make sure the lid is on tight when you leave with the extra. My partner turned over about 3 gallons worth in his wifes Audi.

I have found that if you use bread goods and it gets moldy they won't eat it as well.

Get some grease and pour it around that will get a bear coming also.

Yeah one of my sites was hit 2 days in a row. I saw the bears a sow and 3 cubs. but they were not back the last 2 days. The weather turned real nasty, its cold and windy here.
The doughnuts I am getting are about as fresh as you can get. When I pick them up they are only about 6 hours old, no mold even on the ones I have had for a week. Anyone need bait?
I have been doing a honey burn everytime I go to each site, thats not working, I did put a chicken in a pail to hang at each site but with the weather being so cold they are not rotting and if I put them out there they will freeze so I donno. The site that did get hit had a fish head hanging from a tree (before they climbed up and ate it!)
Well I will keep going and I think I will give up on one of the spots. Everytime I go there I look around and think if I was a bear I wouldn't look for doughnuts here! Actually the woods are too open and don't provide much cover close by. I am still looking for new places too.

Update. One bait is being hit every 1 to 2 days and one other site was hit once. I gave up on the other. I will be opening a new one tomorro. I have a friend that was telling me about the guy next door to him whos garbage is being raided every night. I will set up one near there. He told me that there are several houses in that development with "stop the bear hunt" signs but to go ahead and park at his house and f-um. I told him that if I get a bear I will come and get him so he can take a picture of me and my bear next to one of those signs.
I also learned some new things in the past week.
1) Bear hunting cuts into every other aspect of my life. time.
2) My truck can't do everything I thought it could!!!
3) I think I will hunt bears the rest of my life!

If you have trouble getting bear in then its time to be a bear yourself. If you know the area well if it has logging roads, trails ect. Try soaking a large rag in molasees and tie it to yourself and start making some spider legs back to your bait. Make sure you freshen every once in awhile and it should do the trick. If you try baiting the next year take grease and litterally pour it all arrround your bait site. pile your logs up with a small treat underneath not much since its months before season. I usually do this in June that when the breeding begins and once a bear hits your bait site he in turn will leave grease scent all over where he goes since it will be lodged in between his paws. What he is doing is giving you free advertising to all of his friends in black. Hope this two cents helps.

Joe
