My wife recently brought home a black lab/hound mix from the humane society. He is about 6 or 7 months old and just started bird hunting, just went for the first time last weekend. We hunted grouse and woodcock and I was wondering if he would be a good bird dog or not. I'd like to try phesant some time but have no idea what I would be doing. Also any tips on how to train him would be very appreciated.

Welcome to BGH!

Wish I could tell you how to train your pup but you have two different type's in one dog and it's hard to tell which type will surface in the end. Most likely either will retrieve. The lab part will probably be easy to keep with you and the hound part might want to run. If it runs to much, out of gun range, it won't do you much good. But there is a chance it might not. If that's the case, work on retrieving and take it for walks where it might find birds. If it will root them out, probably will, in gun range at least you can shoot them. If it will go to the shot bird then it will probably learn the retrieve also given time.
