I know this is an elk forum but you guys always have the answers. I recently purchased the Garmin 60cx. It comes with a 64MB SD card and the MapSource trip and waypoint manager CD-ROM. It says on the CD that there are no detailed maps included. However, I read somewhere that someone was able to download maps using this CD. Where would you download the maps from? Also, with a 64MB card would you only be able to download one MapSource CD per card or would you be able to do more than one. Would it be better to not use up this SD card on this MapSource CD and use it for maybe getting a better map CD? The unit also accepts pre-programmed cards and was wondering if the MapSource CDs were better or are the pre-programmed SD cards better. Right now I would like to get a more detailed map of my hunting area which is the Homochitto National forest in SW Mississippi. Hopefully next year I will be making a hunt to CO and would be getting a map for there also. I know these are a lot of questions the only other GPS I had was an el cheapo model. Any help, tips or comments appreciated. ::-k

check it out my friend, first off try to exchange that gps for the 60scx it gives you an altitude meter and electronic compass. if not you still have a great unit, toss the blank sd card it came with and purchase the pre loaded garmin topo cards, you will get about four states on each card for abought $75. I have using my gps together with a national geographic cd for my home computer, they are about $90 for each state that you purchase. With both software programs are compadible, so you can import or export waypoints back and forth. I can prescout in great topo detail from my home computer and take garmin gps into the field and have great confidence. good luck!!

Thanks HOGGETTER. I will have to look into those National Geographic maps. I used the unit this past weekend and it worked great. It would be nice to see some real detail as the preloaded map is pretty pathetic except for major landmarks and highways. Would have thought more people would have responded with suggestions as I know this is a pretty popular unit.

X2! I bought the entire US disc and laod the maps as I need them.

Here is the next cool thing. Once you open it up in BaseCamp, then choose the option to view in Google Earth! Fromt here you can even go to flight simulator mode which is too cool! You can start with two planes, but I think you can load more. There is one that is a prop plane and another a jet! Wicked cool!

60CSX is the best I have owned or used!

I have the 60csx and have bought both the preloaded SD cards and CD discs. Discs are a less expensive way to go and you can load up what you need, as you need it. I do buy blank memory chips and load up various areas of the country on different chips, then place them back into their boxes when I don't need that area, and label them. Blank memory chips are very cheap, like $3-10 each, depending on capacity.
