Years ago it was always suggested to use magnum primer's when using spherical powders. Seem's those powder's have a coating that is a bit hard to ignite. Well I've never used a lot of that type powder so when I found a keg of H414 a while back, I just used my standard primers. They didn't work to bad but I was using 70gr SMK's in my 243 and considering the bullet didn't like what I was getting. Looked thru my primes cabnit and found one bow of Fed 215's, there was 15 left in it. Reloaded the two best loads I'd found with my favorite Herter primer's and the same loads with the Fed 215's. Well the 215's cut the group's in half. Now instead of pretty nice group's. the bullet's hole's touch.

That spherical powder sure does meter nice too. Now that I have so much, I'm gonna find other use's for it.

I've noticed that as well. Switching to magnum primers in a 6mm Rem load using win 760 improved the group size, with no other changes in the load.

It has always been said in reloading that you need to play with a load to find out what your rifle likes. I have a 22-250 that loves a certain combination and load length. If you change the power charge just 1 or 2 grains the accuracy will go out the window from where you can cover 5 shots with a dime to needing a half dollar. It isn't much but it is enough.

The coating on the powder might deterimine what primer to use. But, overall with spherical or extruded, what really is going to be a determining factor when working up a load is the burn rate of the powder. Makes not difference if it's ball or stick. Generally use magnum primers with heavier grain loads of slower burning powders. Use regular primers with faster burning powders. Let burn rate and case volume be the determining factor. That's what I'd advise to start with. Later you can modify the load and the components as you see fit.
