Would like some opinions of muzzel brakes
I've never owner an rifle with one on. But the idea of reducing recoil on the 300 wim mag I'm working on is appealing.
Not as tough as I used to be I guess.
Thoughs, experiences? |

| JJD, I have one on my 7mmRUM. I can shoot it without the brake but with all the reloading/shooting I do, it really makes a difference. They are loud for sure. You can either wear ear plugs/muffs as I do. When I'm deer hunting out of a box blind or treestand, I wear my walker's quad muffs for hearing protection and to hear the deer/wildlife better. I use them at work also as my hearing was getting bad before I purchased the RUM. I know not everybody would want to spend the extra money on the game ears but it worked out for me. Because I work in construction, I can write off the cost. hope that helps. |

I changed out the flash hider on my M1A to a muzzel break and I found my follow up shot were a lot quicker, and reduced recoil to about the same as my SKS. :thumbsup1: I like them.
Now if you get an adjustable one you can tune the harmonics of your barrel so that you get tighter groups. Just a thought.

| I have a removable one on my 340 Weatherby and love it for shooting off the bench but I will take it off when hunting. I was working up some new loads this past summer with it and did not have the brake on and afterwards I could really feel it. I also have a barrel for my Contender in 7-30 Waters and wouldn't be with out it on it. It does however drops the muzzle velocity down 200 fps on the Contender. I haven't checked the Weatherby for any variation yet. |

Was the noise the issue? |

OMG! No kidding! The first hunt with my .340 I had ringing in my ear for a month! NOT GOOD!
The only other thing that was ever that loud was when I was on the firing line and standing next to an M1 Abrams, and had no idea that it was a live range... KABOOM!
Needless to say the coffee I was bring my 1stSgt was in the air real quick! |

| That is what I like about the one that I have on my .340 Weatherby. You can remove it for hunting or put it on for use on the bench or sighting in. I do know of some guides that don't like to take hunters with rifles that have brakes on them just because of the noise off to the side factor. |

Critter,
Do they thread the barrel for the removable brake?
Does taking it on and off change the point of impact as a result of change in barrel whip like the BOSS system?
Don,
My hearing aids will be here just after the first of the year, no joke
Noise factor is a serious consideration. I can aford a sore shoulder, but can hardly aford any more hearing loss.
All,
Thanks for the input. |

| The barrel was threaded and came that way from the factory. It also included a cap so that you didn't bugger up the threads when the brake was off. As far as changing point of impact I haven't had any problems with it. When I first sighted it in I thought that I would but when I took it off it was fine. |
