hey guys im 18 and new to the forum, I headed down to florida from maryland to help my mom move into her house and one of her friends down there invited me to go hog hunting with dogs, it was a great expirence and i had a lot of fun, so much fun that im hooked.....i have read all about dogs that are used, training, equipment, ect... my question is that i have not heard about specific dogs and i want to know if someone could clear some things up for me

dobermans, presa canarios and cane corsos? has anyone used these dogs for hog hunting?
im planning on getting two dogs and training them in florida, living in maryland its hard to find dogos and other top hog dogs(i also live in pg county so no pitbulls either :cry: )
also like i said im new to hog hunting with dogs so any other good sites or training tips that you guys could show me would be awsome

First off Welcome to BGH hogDog!!! Second off...My reccommendation would be to PM tnhoundsman...He is very up to date on dog hunting hogs and would be more than happy most likely to help you figure out your needs. You will want to know what kind of hog hunting you will prefer to do as well. I.E. Catch hunting or simply trail and bay. If Catch hunting then good pits for catch dogs would be my reccommendation along with a couple of good trailers. There are several bloodlines to choose from and some are great in some situations while they may be pitiful in others.. Now as for Trail and bay hunters a good cur or catuahla (not sure on that spelling) Are rugged as hell and have great noses and sight hunt very well too. Some like to use Walkers as well (more of a coon hunting hound but still MASSIVE foot speed and tough as nails too) But its all about how and where you are going to hunt.. You may wish to have more of a silent trailer that will only sound off when on sight and not just on trail. Private message tnhoundsman and Im sure he will be more than helpful. its so hard to fing good hog dog breeds in maryland, the most readily avaiable dogs within a reasonable distance of me are dobermans, rottweilers, and some american bulldogs ::-k

i replied to your pm. stay away from the dobs and rotties they are not hunting breeds. and a bulldog will do you no good at all if you don't have bay dogs to get a hog stopped so a bulldog can do its job.granted i am kinda bias but a couple good plott hounds will do both jobs on most hogs. cur dogs are popular in flordia but they are mostly hot nosed and don't tend to do much grabbing of hogs and normally just enough to make it stand and bay and tend to have several broke bays because they just ain't real catchy. granted you will probly have a hard time finding dogs close to you so you'll have to either travel to get them or have them shipped and if you want to make hog dogs do your homework and make sure they come from big game breeding. i'm very familiar with the lines of plott hounds that make good big game dogs and hit and miss on some other breeds. so decide what kind of dog you want and i can point you in a good dirrection. like do you want a dog that can take an older track and show you a hog or do you want something that will pass up a little older track and find something a little fresher

and dont take me as tryin to discurage you! im not and wouldnt do anything but try to help someone wanting to get into the sport we are few in the grand scheme of things as far as the hunting community goes! i'm just stateing facts so you don't get something useless in your hunting prusit!
