Hey every one,
FNG here ;) from Colorado. I just joined but have been reading the posts for awhile.
found some great info!!!

My father and I are doing are fist deer hunt together since I was 16 this fall.
There were some otc tags for bear for the unit we are hunting so I figured I would get one, cuz if I didnt I know the bear would be every were!! lol

He is not real interested in camping so it limits our range and altitude we can go to.
The area I'm looking at for deer in in unit 19 in the Cache la Poudre Wilderness. at 8500ft-6000ft, is that going to be to low for late oct bear?

If the slim chance we both fill our tags I could go up in elivation.
Any other thoughts or ideas are welcome.

Well I filled my deer tag today! So the rest of the week I'm lookin for a bear. Been seein some sign but no bears. DOW officer said they are still up and about. I checked out some of the clear cuts but didn't see much sign around them. Seen one area that there were a ton of Scratch marks about eye level on the aspen trees. Are these territory marks? The looked older though? I have heard some people have luck with calling. Will this work this late in the year? Any other bear tips would be great! Tim

Rockmonky look close to water holes right now (lower elevation and near water). Depending on the amount of pressure right now in your area, if there is not a lot, calling may work (remember electronic calls are illegal) but will probably be pretty slow. Also if there are a lot of pinion trees in your area they will still be eating pinion nuts and laying around a lot, they are slowing down.

Thanks for the info! I forgot to say that were I have been huntin there is a ton of elk hunters. But I'm not limited to that unit now that I filled my deer tag the bear tag is good for 7,8,9,19,119,20. I was thinking about maybe tryin over by estas park I have some info on were the bears are raiding the dumpsters near the National Forest. The only real food source I found were I was hunting is the ground berrys. But there all over. Thanks Tim

Try talking to the elk hunters they tend to get mad when a bear comes in and takes over there kill, so if you could find where one of them elk hunters left a carcass that would be a great spot to start hunting.

My son wounded a bear and come to find out there was a elk carcass near by from a earlier kill and some of our other guys saw bears in the area also.
After my son killed his elk I hunted over his elks carcass for 3 days not stinky enough, they do like it nasty.

Calling can work at any time of the year, but it works better at times of low natural food sources. If there are elk or deer in the area I would use cow/calf talk or fawn distress.

If you are finding lots of bear sign near a natural food source I would spend more time quitely glassing rather then calling, but I would definately call for the last hour before leaving that spot.

Thanks for the info every one! My season for bear was. Pretty much a bust.I got sick the last few days. But the last place I found had quite a bit of sign but couldn't find any food source left. The natural area I had to walk through to get to this place had bears eating apples every nite according to the guy that worked there. But I could not find a easy way to get to were they came in and out that was legal to hunt. I'm going to try to put in for a regular season tag next year its all of Sept. Should have much better luck when there in there feeding.
