So I have an external frame pack (simple camp trails frame) and I am trying to devise a way to put a shelf at the bottom so that packing out elk quarters (if I am so lucky) etc will be easier. I am worried that without a shelf, things of such weight would fall through the straps. Ideas? Clarification?

Greg

Or is the shelf not essential? Does anybody pack out with an external frame backpack with no bottom shelf?

GregB have you looked at the Bull-pacs frames?
http://www.bullpacs.com/

My husband has used one for a few years now and swears by it. The shelf at the bottom is important and helps to keep the meat on your pack and back. We also use the frame during the off-season to pack individual pontoon boats into lakes in wilderness areas. The shelf works perfectly for setting the frame of the pontoon on, then he bungee cords it all together and packs the boat to the lake or river.
