I am an Outfitter in Colorado and I drew a Whitetail Archery tag for Kansas Unit 12 this year......

I am hunting some private land with a previous client of mine here in Colorado. I have NEVER hunted Whitetails before!! We are hunting from November 6-15th.

Can anyone suggest the type of gear I should pack for this hunt? We will be ONLY doing treestand hunts. I purchased and sent an API oversized ladder stand out for my comfort......any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have also purchased a "True Talker" grunt call and Primos rattlebag as well as "Standing Estrus" doe scent.

You should be in some nice pre rut hunting. You never know what the weather is going to be like in Kansas. But its should not be down right cold but I would be ready for anything. Grunt call and rattling horns would be my two top pick for this hunt. If you need anything let me know. We have land in unit 12 as well.

Thanks Brandon for the input......

PM me your info so that when I get down there I can call if I do need something.

I'll be driving out from Colorado Springs a couple of days ahead of time and driving into Wichita to pick up a buddy at the Wichita Airport. He's still looking into maybe flying into Oklahoma instead so I don't know my exact route as of yet.

I'm really looking forward to hunting the Whitetail instead of the usual mule deer hunts I've grown up with

looks like my buddies are flying into Wichita at noon on November 6th. I will be leaving late the 5th and driving into Wichita early morning in order to make it a little early.

Can you tell me the best directions to the airport once I get into Wichita?

is the weather down there effecting our Whitetail rut this year? I leave this coming Wednesday afternoon to drive down there and my buddies from Florida are affraid that the weather has been too warm and that the weather WILL be too warm while we're there from the 6th through the 15th......has your hunting been successful yet this year? Thanks for all the help.

Rut is around the corner!!! The weather has been warm but it does not seem like it will effect the rut to much. You will be coming in at good time and should see some good buck action.

I sat tonight and saw handful of little bucks checking does and than a ten came out and got everybody running around. Its so close!!!

Good Luck

Thanks Brandon,

I leave in 2 more days and we're SOOOO excited! I just received an email from KDWP reminding me that I need to purchase a Non-resident license still...... WOW! So I pay for a Deer Permit Non-Resident THEN have to buy a Non-Resident Small game license as well......I went ahead and purchased a Non-Res Anterless permit as well.

Looks like I'll have my hands full......

Thanks,

I ended up at the Gander Mountain in Wichita and was able to shoot my bow and adjust for the altitude difference. Then a week later I bagged a nice 9 point buck last Friday! I've made it back home yesterday with a memory I'll never forget hunting in South Eastern Kansas.....I can't wait for next year!

Hey JP,

Good to see your hunt went well. Were you in Chataqua County around near Sedan, Ks?

The terrain there is similar to that depicted in your pics.

Nice buck!

I saw a nice tall 8 this morning. Would have easily been 150-160. He was with a doe and a 9 point around 140-150 was with them.

Rifle season starts in a couple weeks so if I haven't filled the tag with the bow by then, look out! LOL

Nice work,
Joe

Hey Joe,

I was between Cedar Vale and the Oklahoma border! Not far from Sedan, KS and YES I was in Chataqua County. Excellent property, Excellent deer, and as the week went on the rut kicked in and made for some EXCELLENT hunting!

I wish I knew what that mass on the base of his left antler looked like before he broke it off! Notice the kicker point going straight back into his ear on that side as well. His ear had a big sore where it had been rubbing that little point.....
