| I'm back in Halifax and spent the last week up at the camp scouting for deer season. Unfortunately it looks like the deer (or at least the bucks) have gone elsewhere. After nearly 3 days of solid good-ole fashioned ground-pounding I have not been able to find a single scrape or rub anywhere. Have any other NS hunters noticed this, or should I start looking in a new area? |

| Sadly, I can't comment. I have been busy with work that I have not been out a single time. I do suspect that the warmer than normal temps may have pushed the pre-rut back a little. Don't give up on your spot yet. If the bucks liked the spot last year, they will probably like it for the same reasons this year. |

| Was out the other day and seen a few small scrapes nothing big along with some rubs.I was walking or should say crawling down a trail(under low hanging limbs)when I seen what I thought was a shed but it turned out to be an 11 point skull that scored 158 typical.Going back tomorrow to put up a stand. |

Hello All
Just arrived her (NS) Am a bit surprised at the few # of deer I am out Cole Harbor/Lawrencetown way and have not seen a singe one yet...Are they that scarce or what?????
I am heavy into archery but also own firearms Lots of rabbits however, maybe have to rely on them for fun/meat etc.
South shore between Chester and Hubbards looks OK for deer and maybe bear...I will do some scouting
Also told that there is reasonable hunting up Preston way
Any food for thought would be appreciated.....

| Welcome to the forum RAK. I am from Chester but there are not many areas where you can hunt (legally) which is why you see a lot of deer and why the pop. is strong here. You may find a farmer who would not mind you bow hunting but be warned that Chester/Hubbards has a large population of animal rights activists and most areas will not welcome you with open arms. It is a retirement community for the rich and most are not hunters nor do they understand/want to understand hunters. Musk. valley is also a good area for deer and that is not far from you either. Do you know anything of the hunting up the Mersy Connecter rd at Simms Settlement area...I have been up there picking blueberries and have seen some Deer and Bear sign.................................Looks like an excellent area for trout also (I am heavily into flyfishing also...:) NICE COUNTRY
Seen a nice little buck, not sure of the points on his head as they were knotted and rounded at the tips, figure he will be a 6 or small 8 Should the deer not be nearing full antler development soon although still in velvet..? --Think bow season starts up next month
Small body.......bet he wouldn't much more than 130-- Nice to see though since I have not seen many here...they were like cattle up in the Kingston On area.
I do enjoy watching them as much as harvesting

| The mersey connector can be a great place to hunt deer during bow season. During rifle hunting season the hunters outnumber the deer. ::evil: and you are constantly pestered by game wardens to the point that you can't have a fun hunt. If you avoid it for the first two weeks of the season the hunter numbers will fall off because most take vacation time for the first week or so and have to return. |

I hear ya, -----i am a bowhunter so I will have to scout it out....maybe by water from Connaught Lake area :D
Hopefully by gun season he'll be in my freezer
