Hey I just wanted to get some feedback from guys that have hunted archery elk on if 60 lbs is heavy enough for elk . I have a new bow and am shooting at about 300 fps with a 100 grain broad heads. The bow is tuned up to its max weight of 60 lbs. I had 2 shoulder surgerys and thought my archery days were done but feel pretty good shooting now . I also was wondering if you would recommend fixed blade or expandables. Any input would be helpful. Thank you in advance.

My first question would be how does the arrow weigh?

tony, 60lbs is fine for elk. My father has shot 52 lbs for years (because of a shoulder injury) and has taken many elk. My nephew took a great 325" bull at 35 yards shooting 45 lb compound. Too many people out there think they should be shooting 85 lbs to take an elk, archery kills by cutting.

Here is my nephews bull from last year (his first).

Tony, 60# is plenty. I would increase your total arrow weight if you can by using maybe a 125 gr fixed head. I would shoot for at least 450 gr total weight, preferably more to get more penetration. Remember, your probably not going to be shooting long distances so speed isn't so much of a factor. And by increasing your arrow weight your bow will be quieter at the shot. The arrow absorbs more energy instead of the bow which translate to more Kinetic energy which in turn means more penetration.
Get your total arrow weight up there between 450-500 and you'll be fine.

With a 29 and a half inch draw even with 125 grain broad heads I dont think it is possible to get the total arrow weight up to that . Carbon arrows are about 8.4 grains per inch with the 60 lbs I am shooting.I do like the way the 125s are penetrating the target.
