My wife lucked out and drew an either sex moose tag for the most northwest part of Montana. We have never hunted moose. Just looking for advice here. I've been reading all the online articles I can regarding tactics and calling. Anyone know when the rut tends to ramp up in NW Montana? The articles I've read indicated early September to late October. The hunt runs from Sept 15 through the end of November, so we have lots of oportunity. We have lots of other tags to fill (elk, deer, antelope, bear) even a planned pheasant hunt to South Dakota, so we would like to get this one under our belt early in the season if at all possible, but the moose will take presidence over all other hunting for obvious reasons.
My wife has killed her share of deer, elk and antelope. She's is pretty jacked up about getting a moose tag. She has reserved a place on the wall for a moose head since we bought the house. Now she has a chance to fill it.
Anyway, advice, advice, advice. Gimme all you got.
Thanks Much

Congrat's on the tag. Put my wife in to get drawn for moose this yr as well(fingers crossed). From our limited experience: They seem to congregate in marshy areas with willows surrounded by big forest. Sort of secluded grassy, wet, meadows.
The lohman cow call works great, just did the bull call by mouth. This yr I'm going to make two small "antlers" out of some 3/8" birch plywood to both show and scrape on trees. The heart is small and sits well down and forward in the chest.
Hope you get one, you'll looove moose meat. Our supply is nearly gone. |

Thanks for the tips Bruce. I'll look into the Lohman cow call. I spoke with a couple folks at work who have been moose hunting (several years ago). They suggested a few areas in my wifes hunting unit. Looking forward to getting out toward the end of summer to start looking for possible locations. Not familiar with this particular unit.
