Yesterday I put the Brush Hog on my tractor and cut Paths in pasture for some lining drills and baseball/T drills. I cut three 100yd lanes that diverge from one spot and run about 2-3 yds apart at the start and maybe 10 yds at far end. I also cut some lanes at right angles to these for overs.
Well I brought all three dogs(10, 7, and 1) out and smart butt I am, thought I'd just sit them all and not bother to put two on chain whilst working first dog(10) and had a problem at first with young dog who wanted to have a turn-NOW-- well I didn't get too frustrated and after one or two ret for old dog he stayed where I put him-- good and steady-
one other problem I had was none of the dogs had worked three lanes like these and I had put out 4 bumpers on each lane-- all dogs tried to cross lanes to get first bumper spotted-at first at least but by end of session they were all going only down lane sent and back-- I think it will be a good drill for them running straight to bumper as sent and also with all three in area good for steadying pup and keepin old boys honest. I'll see in a few minutes if I'm right. |

| Been a lot of years sice I've worked with retrievers and then mostly a few of my own. Really like watching a dog do what they are supposed to do though. So where's a photo of those dogs? |

| Don- I'm Technologivally Amish--meaning I'm an old fart who is about a savy with a cell phone, PC, digital camera etc as they are. I can swervice my tractor but can't post pics-sorry. |

SeniorCoo - opps, I mean Widux.
Keep in mind that one of the main objects of Lining Drills is to help build confidence. As long as the dogs are going to the piles with entusiasm keep up the drills. start short with a single bumper per line and increase length 10 to 15 yds at a time. If you are not going to force to pile with an e-collar, quit the drills when the dogs enthusiasm starts to wane. These types of drills can get old in a hurry for many dogs.
To curtail switching get a few guys or kids to help. If the dog switches lines and goes for another bumper on another line have you helper pick up the bumper and deny the dog having it.
Add more bumpers as the dog catches on. |

I just happened to recognize the same post from a different forum. Just my way of letting you know I'd seen said post before. I have no problem with that at all. As a matter of fact, different opinions are a good thing. If I need an answer to a question, I will often times ask on a couple of different forums.
Theres more than one way to get from point A to Point B. Dog training is not a math equation, there is no one right answer. |

16 yrs wow. Only been 3 for me. Then got going on the city council, became watermaster (have no idea how), mow the city grass but one real good thing. Working with a new horse!
My old Ben was put down several years ago with a huge tumor in his chest. Really miss the old guy. Young lady here in town has her horse here, 5 yr old, and does nothing with it. It was abbused by her ex so I had to get past that but he's starting to really let his milk down now. Figure I should be riding hin in a couple months. |
