Do you carry a side arm when out scouting ?
I carry my .44 magnum Superblack Hawk just for protection never go into the woods without it .. thinking of down sizing the gun to a smaller revolver maybe a .357 magnum or a .45 ... What to you all carry ...

Thought you might get a few more replies to this here :thumbsup1:
When out scouting I tend to carry my buckmark cal .22. Maybe my 1911 45?
Tend to carry the 44 for hunting situations only?

When I scout here in northern Michigan, I carry a 357 with hardcast 180 gr Buffalo Bore loads. This is bear and wolf country. When scouting the family farm in Pa., I carry a Ruger Single Six in 22 WMR, mostly for feral dogs and cats.

44 Is a hand cannon. I don't know where you moved to but a 22 will scare about anything away. When I'm scouting I carry my bolt action 22 rifle but I never go in the woods without a side arm. Usually my off duty 9mm. My father was attacked by a rabid porcupine while setting up a stand. He blew it out of the tree with a keltec 32 that he always has in his pocket because its small and light weight

Depends on the area. Where I hunt it's mountain lions and black bear that pose danger, but they're not the only threat. When scouting I carry concealed, either a 9mm Browning MkIII or a .45 ACP tricked-out Colt 1911, because I'm more worried about the threat certain two legged creatures can pose to me when out in the boonies far away from help or the nearest road. Had only a couple strange encounters before, and not for a long time, but it was enough that I now always bring insurance

Guess I live dangerously compared to you guys. The only time I'd carry a handgun when scouting is if I was in grizzly or mountain lion country.
Even after being bluff charged by a black bear ( he charged 3 times, turning back then coming again- each time stopping short at about 10 yards). I still don't feel insecure enough to carry. I'd rather carry my pistol in town than in the field.
I sure wouldn't walk around with that big .44. That's alot of iron to carry around, but if you're in grizzly or brown bear country a .44 might be just the ticket.

I'd rather have it, and not need it then need it and not have it. Just scouting or camping I usually carry either my S&W .357 4 inch or one of my 1911's. If the weather is bad my Glock 40.

Depends what part of the country your in.... a .44 Magnum is best when in large preditor woods where a .22 cal rifle won't do nothing but make them laugh at you.

Depending on my mood, I carry a .44 Mag or a my .45 Auto as I got a greater fear of man than I do critters.

I carry a G29 10mm with buffalobore 180s. Ive been charged by moose bear and now there are more wolves then ever. So i would rather be alive then dead with the pistol at home. Montana here bears, cats wolves. and griz, and how better to get a persons attention if ya fell and broke a leg then a few rounds out of your pistol.

Typically I carry a 9mm Glock with me. Mostly Coyotes around here not to much to be worried about. I also have a .44 but find it bulky for going through the thick stuff. Glock is small and is comfortable, also can carry a second clip, just in case.
Of course, this is Massachusetts and we all know we are not suppose to carry hand guns in the woods....... :[-X

I've been looking for a new gun to carry scouting and well up Maine at my camp I went to the Presque Isle gun show and saw a pretty good gun , I believe it was called the Judge it shots both .410 and .045 nice looking revolver pretty light , think it has enough killing power to stop a Bobcat ,Bear, Coyote if loaded with .045's ?

Turbo_tech,
The little 410 loaded with slugs or 00 buck has about the stopping power of a 44 mag give or take. Same muzzle energy anyway.

I'm from Kalifornia so enlighten me. What's a moose bear? It sounds really scary!! :o Fangs, claws AND antlers? Yipe! We have something worse here though. It's called a Pelosi! It's mean, ugly, taxes your booze and smokes and renders your guns useless! :D

Thanks for the idea of putting slugs in the .410 revolver didn't even think of that when I looked at the gun I was just thinking bird shot and .45 rounds, now I'm really interested in it .... the chrome really looked good also but would like to see one in stainless . thanks agian

I thought the same thing but, The 410 BuckShot out the Judge Doesn't Preform Well At all. Doesn't pattern and its not accurate. Your better off getting a straight 45
