I live in Hawaii and I am interested in getting a Portuguese Pointer pup. I have never heard of or seen one in Hawaii and would like to hear from anyone who has used one for Upland Bird hunting before I go thru the trouble and expense of shipping one to Hawaii. Thanks for your input.

Sometimes buying a relatively unknown breed like that can be a disaster. If there were a couple where you live you could go watch, that would be one thing. But where you live you can't so you have to rely on what someone that loves their dog thinks about it.

Keep in mind that there is a reason some breeds are not well known and it's usually not because the breeders are protecting the breed, reguardless of their claims.

I dont have any knowledge of the Portuguese Pointer, sorry.

I got a Large Munsterlander as my frist hunting dog, they too are not that popular where I live. The one thing I have found is there is no one I can talk too locally about my dog. I havnt had any troubles with training the dog, other then my own flop ups :P) At one of the clubs, they are sure how to "grade" Dutchess on her "search, track, and points" as ..."We dont know how or what a L.M. is suposse to look like"...

As far as getting a "un-popluar breed" that I have found is like Don said, there is no one else to talk with regrading the little "habbits" that your breed might have. I will say, if you like what you have read about the breed, then by all means get what you want, just be aware as been said, you wont get as much indivisual help as other folks wont know about the breed.

As far as my experience with a little known breed, I have no complaints :)

Good luck with your choice,

Thanks for the advice, I have read nothing but good about this breed but as you said, I will have to rely on what I am being told and not what i can see for myself. It is hard to any type of bird hunting breed here as soon as someone has a liter of pups they are all sold sight unseen from my experience. I thought that by getting a pup and breeding it to my friends English Pointer, we might have some great hunting dogs on our hands. I did a little more research on getting pups to Hawaii and regretfully it is way to involved for me. I guess I will have to settle for whatever I can get locally. Thanks for the input anyways.
