| I drew a moose tag in Idaho this year. The season has been open for a week and I have seen 4 bulls so far. The first I would have taken if I could have gotten a clean shot at it but the rest looked a little small. However they were quite distance and I'm not sure exactly how big they were. My question is: Does anyone have a basic way of judging the width when in the field? This tag is a once in a life time tag so I am trying to be selective. The success rate the last 3 years has been 98% so I don't feel stressed about passing anything up, YET. |

Hey Cda,
Shot alot of moose...many units in Alaska have horn restrictions....50" minimum. Here's a few basic measurements I've used on Alaskan/Yukon...never done a L48 moose so maybe subtract 10% from these numbers (?)
Distance between tips of ears (alert ears) 20-22"
Distance across top of head 10"
Distance between horn bases at the narrowest point (top @ hairline) 7"
There's also a few ID moose posted on the monstermulie website...check 'em out at http://www.monstermuleys.com/index.html

Hey Gutpile,
Thanks for the tips. That was a great website. However, I think some of the measurements may have been exagerated a little. Some of those 45in moose look a whole lot bigger than some that claim 40in. But based on the majority of the pics and articles I've found, I have seen about 4 of them so far that are right around 40in. I have heard of some 50in taken near my spot last year, but I don't think I'll get too greedy. I'll save that for my dream hunt in Alaska. Thanks again. |

CDA,
I just thought of another place you could look...register yourself @ trophyphotos.com ...they have a search engine that will allow you to look at the L48 only moose.
You might also go to the Monstermulie.com forum under moose/sheep/etc. Chat with Preditor & Blank...they did a ID moose hunt last year & took a nice B&C bull. |
