You know, if this were Al Qaeda, the feds would be going after the organization as well as other organizations/individuals that support/feed it. I may have grown too cynical over time, but I can't shake the notion that politics affords envirowhackos much greater license to commit terrorism. When Arab terrorists blow something up, the media treats it as hatred-driven brutality. Yet when environmentalists do it, they treat it like it's some sort of protest.

ELF is part of the combined gnome, troll, goblin (no hobgoblins though!) season in CO. Just go to local PETA rally to find plenty of specimens.

I was going to post the same thing Ex and your words were well choosen. It does seem that these attacks draw the same sort of attention as afforded a political protest. Unfortunately, it is going to take somebody getting killed before it is taken more seriously. These attacks seem to be coming more frequently and with the increased frequency of arson it is only a matter of time. It is organized crime with anybody they don't like as their target.

I'm also shocked at the stupidity of the vandalism. When ELF burned the two-elk lodge here in CO, there was a remote connection that by not putting in the lodge more lynx habitat would be saved. I'm not saying I condone or support what they did, but at least there may have been some sort of tangible "environmental" result from their terrorism (although admittedly that is a stretch). However remote, there was at least a connection between saving habitat if you burned two-elks lodge. Again that doesn't even remotely justify what they did, but at least it has a rational basis (sort of).

With these two most recent arsons in CA, there is no tangible connection to anything, other than a vague rallying against sprawl and gas guzzling. These new attacks are very dangerous, because it suggests they will attack anything without provocation or without cause (even in a warped sense). Terrorism plain and simple.

Yeah, I thought it a bit hypocritical that ELF burned the SUVs as a favor to the planet. Think about the amount of pollution released into the atmosphere by burning those vehicles. Think about the contaminated runoff generated by firefighters putting out the fires. Consider too, the environmental impacts and energy use associated with replacing those vehicles -- all the way from hard rock mining, chemical production, manufacturing (with its associated hazardous waste generation), all the lumber needed for paper products, etc.

Environmentalists protest, boycott, etc, to draw attention to their cause without adding to the "problem." ELF certainly isn't motivated by care for the Earth. This has about as much to do with environmental concerns as Al Qaeda does with Islam. It's a philosophy hijacked and exploited in an attempt to legitimize hatred, rage, and nihilism.

I don't think there is an ELF brave or crazy enough (depending on your political veiw point) to come out to the ranch and take my wife and her H2 on

How does destroying other peoples' personal property justify their cause? I never understood that, these people claim to be anti- gun, anti-killing, anti-violence types, yet they go around burning things and destroying property and in some cases, even more serious stuff. It's ironic.

Well said CaptainO. They try to justify it by stating they are defending the defenseless (nature), although with this recent rash of crime it is impossible to point at exactly what they are defending other than a vague ideal.
