I know that the DOW has designated certain units in Colorado as "trophy" units where they allow only a limited number of bull licenses each year. I can't find a list of what those units are, though. Does anyone know?

Just looking at the numbers and statistics I'm kind of guessing units 201, maybe 66 or 76, maybe 61. Any one know for sure, or know any others?

I hear any unit in Baca county has wall hangers just running around everywhere. :wink:

I'm not sure that the DOW has trophy units per se and if they do I have not been able to find a list either, but there are units where the harvested bull is older than the average for the state.

I have heard from many sources that 201 is one of these units for sure.

What stats are you looking at to make your guess? Average preference point count before draw?

I would not be suprised if 66 was one of these units. I have been told that the area in and around gunnison is good elk (and mulie) hunting.

I think Swollen Tongue mentioned once that he hunted 61, so maybe he would know.

Exactly. I remember reading a newspaper article some time back where a DOW representative talked about "trophy" units and the ways they allocated licenses differently in them. He wasn't specific about which units, though.

I think the folks down in BACA have been pulling your leg. While they do have some elk down in that area, none are trophy quality animals. Most of the bulls aren't very big. Las Animas County has some bigger bulls, down around the Kim area. In fact I saw a 320 6X6 that a high school kid killed down there.

If you contact a DOW office they should let you know which units are considered trophy and how many points you need to draw. I hunted 79 once, which borders 76 and I was told that 76 is a trophy unit and sometimes those bulls will spill over into 79. But that was just the talk in my hunting camp.

I don't think it is possible (except in a private land situation) to hunt elk in Baca county. All the public units i see in my DOW guide refer you to units in either Prowers or Las Animas counties...

Thought you would be interested in the attached photo. This bull was taken from unit 201 on October 6, 2003. It grossed 342 points (with 4 broken tines). One of my hunting partners took a bull that scored 371 3/4. Area 201 would definitely have to be classified as a Trophy Area.

Units 1,2, and 201. They all take MANY preference points to get a tag.

There is actually some nice public ground in the comanche grasslands. We hunt that for quail a lot. I have seen elk tracks there, but never seen any wapiti my self. I just heard from one of my customers in Baca that he saw a huge 7X7 in his field the other day. He is supposed to be getting me a picture of it. I heard there was another 370 class 6X6, but that is just hear say.

That's interesting Schemy, I figured it wasn't possible to hunt Baca publicly at all. May the DOW has changed things. I'd like to see a picture of that bull too! :smile:

unit 66 produced a bull that scored 374 this year near Lake City, Co. So this is definitely a trophy area now and has been all draw licenses on everything since 1997.
