Pretty new to this, would any one know about unit 28 in Colorado? Will be hunting from the Winter Park / Tabernash area. Tags are for first season. Do you know if it will be crowed with hunters? What about access to hunting?
Looking at maps looks like some BLM and mostly N.F. that we could hunt, what is the "recreation area" can we hunt it also? Doing most of my scotting from looking over maps. So Any help would be great! Thanks |

| welcome to the forum. I have hunted Colorado for several years now but, never in 28. I do how ever believe where the first rifle is a draw there will be alot less hunters than the general 2nd and 3rd seasons. The recreational land you speak of wouldn't be ski slopes would it? As far as the blm and nat'l forest they are fair game. If you go to the DOW website you can go to big game and then to stats and you can see what was harvested for the last couple of years in that unit. Good Luck |

Thanks for the reply. We are heading up this weekend to look around. Only 4 more weeks til the opener! Is the BLM land down at lower elevations than the N.F.? Would you think we would find the elk that low in 1st season?
Thanks again and good hunting this year. |

sorry was gone over the weekend. Did ya find anything? The blm land that is in the area we hunt is lower than the nat'l forest and consist of oak brush, junipers and pinion pines. I'm not sure what got them low during 2007 2nd season but, 9 of us shot 6 bulls and 2 cows at 7,000 ft. May have been hunting presure from 1st season but only about 8 inches of snow clear on top.
I guess it goes to show hunt where the elk are. good luck. |

| Checked out a few spots back in on road 128 near Devils Thumb trail head. Ran into some bow hunters that had taken 2 bulls the last couple weeks. So sounds like elk in that area. But will we find them in a month? Also got a back up area off road 72, not as nice. My wife is not crazy about getting back in the woods very far, has kind of a phobia about getting lost..... So limits my hunting some, but would enjoy seeing her shot a elk!! We have either sex tags so maybe we will get lucky and have some run though. Happy Hunting. |
