I'll be in 231 or 12 most likely based on current research. I have always hunted archery in the past and have focused on elevation above 10k. One area of interest in flattops is primarily above 10k while the other is between 9-10k. At what elevation are elk typically found during 1st rifle? Will they still hang around tree line or will they spend more time in the valleys at lower elevation? I realize it will vary from year to year but where's a good place to start? I'll be doing a DIY hunt packing in 1-2 miles from the road and going from there. Any help would be appreciated.

They are definitely going to be in the timber by first rifle. They will have been pursued for a month by that point and the few big boys remaining will not be with the herds anymore. But they likely will still be at high elevation, try Big Fish or Skinny Fish Basin.
