Ok, so i just got back from my first weekend of elk hunting above treeline. We hiked to a huge bowl above treeline and we glassed it all day. I have never seen so many different animals in one spot as i did opening day. we saw 11 deer all within bow range. 5 were bucks, 1 would have been a shooter (but of course we only had elk tags :](*,) )
we saw 3 sheep, all legal rams, the biggest of which was almost full curl.
we saw a cinnamon black bear with 2 cubs
we saw a herd of 50 elk and i got within 80 yards of a cow but the whole herd spooked when my buddy cow called. which was a bad move because the whole herd was coming to us without us calling.
that was all on the first day in the same bowl.
day 2: we saw a cow and calf moose and another nice buck
day 3: we got in the basin just as the elk herd ran all the way down the drainage
note: the elk are bugling but only if they're in a big herd. The cows in the herd were talking to each other too. But all the elk are very call-shy, so if your hunting elk, i would recommend not calling very much at all |
